Breaking several rituals, customs, traditions and stereotypes at their wedding, celebrities have often shown us a way forward. Here is a list of Bollywood celebrities who broke stereotypes at their own weddings and inspired us in many ways.
Did you know that Kanyadaan didn't actually mean donating a daughter? During the Vedic period, the tradition was followed during a wedding to signify the groom's acceptance. By doing so, he makes a promise to treat the bride with respect and equality.
However, with the times evolving and change ins social systems, especially after the rise of class, caste and other factors, a daughter was seen as a "burden". Gradually, the false notion of Kanyadaan kicked in.
Furthermore, the Vedas don't talk about Mangalsutra and Sindoor. These rituals and traditions are also more recent.
Once again, the times are changing. and many celebrities are taking a step forward and helping in rewriting these wedding norms and rules.
Here is a list of celebrities who broke stereotypes at their own weddings and inspired us in many ways.
1. Rajkummar Rao wore Sindoor on his forehead.
During their wedding ceremony, Rajkummar Rao prompted Patralekhaa to also put Sindoor on his forehead, and she did just that. After Rajkummar Rao says, "Tum bhi laga do", Patralekhaa obliges. It was a beautiful moment.

5. Purab Kohli and Lucy Payton got married two years after giving birth to their daughter.
A lot of celebrities including Dia Mirza, Celina Jaitly, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neha Dhupia, Amrita Arora among others reportedly conceived before their marriage, but what Purab Kohli and Lucy Payton did was pathbreaking in its own way.
They didn't think about "what people will say". They chose not to rush into getting married. When their daughter turned two, they decided to take the plunge.
"We always wanted to get married, but didn¡¯t want to rush into it. When Inaya was going to come into this world, it was a glorious moment by itself, and we didn¡¯t want to dilute that by suddenly rushing into marriage. We had always planned that we will wait for the right time and the frame of mind, to get settled. But this [wedding] isn¡¯t sudden, as we decided on this date, a year back," Kohli told Hindustan Times.
He also said in another interview that most of the things at their wedding were centered around their daughter. There were 35-40 children at their wedding.
6. Anushka Sharma and Sonam Kapoor were happily smiling during the Bidaai ceremony.
Why must you cry during Bidaai? Starting a new journey is difficult, but why can't it be done with a smile instead of tears? Bidding farewell to the bride with cheers and smiles should be the new trend, right? Anushka Sharma and Sonam Kapoor broke the stereotype at their own wedding. Who else hates Babul ki duaaen leti ja?
7. Dia Mirza chose a female priest for her wedding rituals.
Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi chose to have a woman priest conduct the rituals and solemnize the wedding. "I had never seen a woman performing a wedding ceremony until I attended my childhood friend Ananya¡¯s wedding a few years ago. Ananya¡¯s wedding gift to Vaibhav and me was to bring Sheela Atta who is her aunt and also a priestess, to perform the ceremony for us," she wrote.
8. Many celebrities had an inter-religion marriage.
From Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan to Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu, from Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza to Irrfan Khan and Sutapa Sikdar, several Bollywood celebrities had interfaith marriages thus proving that love is beyond any religion.
9. Neena Gupta chose to stay unmarried after giving birth to her daughter and got married at the age of 50.
Neena Gupta is a woman synonymous with strength. Neena Gupta and Vivian Richards were in a relationship in the '80s. At that time, Neena broke societal norms and had a child out of wedlock. At that time, several people including Satish Kaushik offered to marry her, but she "didn't feel right about getting married just to avoid controversy". She raised the child alone and at the age of 50, she found love and got married to Vivek Sharma.
10 . Many celebrities married divorced men and are living happily since then.
Finally, divorce has much less of a dating stigma than it did a few decades ago. Don't we all make mistakes? Sometimes people grow out of love too, but love can happen twice. From Vidya Balan to Sridevi and Kareena Kapoor; from Bipasha Basu to Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, several celebrities have married divorces and they are all happily married now.
11. Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif among others married younger men.
Age should not be a barrier to love and companionship. It's just a number after all. If a woman marries a younger man, a lot of eyebrows are raised. However, if the gender is swapped in the case, it's an ideal match as per the society. Changing this norm, several celebrities including Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif among others showed that it's nothing to ashamed of. Love knows no bounds, no age.
