Celebrities Who Came Out As LGBTQ+ In 2021: From Kal Penn to Demi Lovato, here are the stars who made us proud this year.
It's a moment of pride!
As they say, celebrities can influence the masses, and it is always good if they do it in the right way. The more of them happily, proudly and openly accept their truths, it gets easier for more people to be able to do the same.
Here is a list of celebrities who came out as LGBTQ+ this year and made us proud.
1. Kal Penn
Kal Penn recently revealed that he got engaged to his boyfriend of 11 years, Josh, whose last name he has kept under wraps. Kal Penn also said that he wants to have a big fat Indian wedding but Josh is a private person who wouldn't like one. As they contemplate their wedding plans, we are extremely happy for the couple.
2. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato is one of the celebrities who have come out as non-binary and will be using the pronouns they/them.
As she shared the news, she wrote on Instagram, "Today is a day I¡¯m so happy to share more of my life with you all ¡ª I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward. This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I¡¯m still learning and coming into myself, and I don¡¯t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I¡¯m doing this for those out there that haven¡¯t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones."
3. Kehlani
American singer-songwriter Kehlani revealed to the world in the most simplest and the most lovable way ever. Taking to Instagram story, she wrote, "You want to know? You want to know what¡¯s new about me? I finally know I¡¯m a lesbian."
4. Joshua Bassett
Joshua Bassett, known for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, said this year in May that he is "figuring out" his sexuality. Later on, he made headlines again when he said in an interview that he is attracted to Harry Styles. "I guess this is also my coming out video," he added.
5. Larry Saperstein
Larry Saperstein, who essays the role of Big Red in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series revealed he is bisexual in a TikTok video during Pride Month.
6. Emma Corrin
The actress who essays the role of Princess Diana on The Crown, came out on Instagram. She wrote, "ur fave queer bride."
7. Alexandra Shipp
The actor came out publicly in an Instagram post and wrote, "Hi. I didn¡¯t come out until I was 28. Though I don¡¯t believe in regrets, this would definitely be #1 for myself. I denied denied denied. I struggled with not only my sexuality, but my femininity." She also added that she is happy now.
8. Kaylee Bryant
The actress and model came out as queer in a simple Instagram post and said, "Hi ? My name is Kaylee and I¡¯m queer! ????Happy Pride Month????."
9. Carl Nassib
American football defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League Carl Nassib became the first openly gay man in the NFL after coming out this June. "I just want to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay," Nassib said in the video posted on Instagram.
10. Tommy Dorfman
Tommy Dorfman, best known for playing Ryan Shaver in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, came out as a transgender woman who uses she/her pronouns.
11. Luke Prokop
Hockey player Luke Prokop came out as gay on social media in July, and thus became first openly gay player in the NHL. He wrote that he is "proud to publicly tell everyone that I'm gay" in an Instagram post.
