India-born chef Vikas Khanna has been feeding people since he was a kid. However, it was only in 2020 that it became a matter of life and death. Sitting in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Michelin-starred chef sent 2.5 million meals to 75 cities to India. In calamities like cyclones and flood, he continues to help people in India by sending food packets for the needy. Despite being a Hindu, do you know why he fasts for a day every Ramadan?
When a Muslim family saved Vikas Khanna's life during the 1992 Mumbai riots
Violent communal clashes took place in 1992 in Mumbai because of the demolition of the Babri Masjid and resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. At that time, Khanna who was training in SeaRock Sheraton, Mumbai was stuck their for days as the entire city was under fire. There was curfew and no one was allowed to go out.
In an old interview, Khanna had revealed that he got to know that the situation at Mumbai's Ghatkopar was getting out of hand because of the riots. He was worried for his brother who lived there. So, he rushed to Ghatkopar, even when he didn't know his way around the city. When he was on his way, a Muslim family saw him and warned him against rioters. They took him in. When the mob came to their house and enquired about him, the family said, "He's our son." He lived with them for about two days. Not only that, they also sent one of the family members out to see if his brother was safe. Since that year, Khanna fasts for one day during the Holy Month of Ramadan in honour of the Muslim family that saved his life and he also keeps them in his prayers.
In 2017, he luckily found the family who saved his life and broke his Ramadan fast with them.
