Or that Aditya Chopra had written the role of Raj Malhotra keeping Tom Cruise in mind? But did you know that Shah Rukh Khan found the film ¡°silly¡±?
Well, that¡¯s what he told Ranbir Kapoor. While the movie was being made, everyone thought it was going to be a disaster. But it ended up being the biggest hit instead.
During an interview with Film Companion, Ranbir Kapoor revealed SRK had himself told him that he finds the movie silly. Here¡¯s what he said:
While talking about his choice of films, Ranbir Kapoor said, ¡°Besharam was the only film in my career which was by design. I wanted to do a masala film. But to get a big hit like 3 idiots and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, that is the hardest genre. Sometimes it comes by chance. For example, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan used to tell me that he always thought Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge that it¡¯s silly. It¡¯s a silly love story. But see what that film did.¡±
In fact, Shah Rukh Khan also found his role in the film girlish.
Yash Chopra's wife
Pamela Chopra revealed that Shah Rukh Khan had almost said no to the movie. "The biggest No came from Shah Rukh Khan himself. He doesn't want to do just a normal romantic film. He says 'kya tu mujhe bilkul eida sa bana raha hai'."
While SRK liked the script, he wasn't convinced if he was right for the role. Khan said that he started acting at the age of 26, and he felt that he was too old to play such roles. Furthermore, he didn't believe he was good-looking or handsome to play a romantic hero. He said Yash Chopra told him that if he doesn't do a love story ever, he won't be a big star. He didn't agree with him.
Then why did SRK agree to do DDLJ?
"I just did DDLJ because of the belief and love that I had for Adi and Yash Ji. I said okay, if you think I'll do this but it is a very girlish role. I am not feeling macho and the funny thing was that I didn't even sweat one day on that film. And if I don't sweat then I feel I have not worked," he said.
Fun Fact: When Salman had seen the movie before it was released, he declared it a hit. At that time, SRK thought he was being generous.
Years later, Shah Rukh agrees that the role Raj was quite close to his heart because he related with him. Just like Raj, he wouldn't ever run away with a girl but rather convince her parents that he is her right choice. And that's what happened in his real life as well. Gauri Khan's parents were initially not convinced about SRK but he convinced them.
