Gehraiyaan Is Not Another 'KANK' Or 'Kabhi Kabhi'; Makers Say It's A Millennial Love Story!
Shakun Batra says his movie is quite different from past movies like Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukherji¡¯s ¡°Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna¡± and Yash Chopra¡¯s 1976 feature ¡°Kabhie Kabhie,¡± which also dealt with the theme of infidelity.
The trailer of 'Gehraiyaan' made fans nostalgic about old Bollywood stories based on infidelity. Many pointed out how it reminded them of messy dramas like KANK (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna) and Yash Chopra's Kabhi.
However, filmmaker Karan Johar has said that his upcoming home production ¡°Gehraiyaan¡± may appear as an infidelity drama; still, it is a deep dive into the lives of complex characters.
At the online trailer launch event, producer Karan Johar and director, co-producer Shakun Batra spoke at length about their millennial love story.
The film is directed by Shakun Batra, best known for directing the critically-acclaimed 2016 family drama ¡°Kapoor & Sons,¡± also produced by Johar through his banner Dharma Productions.
Johar said that the trailer only scratches the surface of the core story, and the film has much more to offer.
¡°We are expressing our syntax, introducing you to complex, twisted, and complex characters. The trailer scratches the surface but more than meets the eye. ¡°At the face of it, you might think it is a film about infidelity-based relationships, but it is not just that. It is talking about so much more, choices and consequences of so much more."
The filmmaker said ¡°Gehraiyaan¡± is one of its kind.
¡°It is a film that you have not seen. It is a film about the power of love, lust, and longing by the millennials and how they react to love, lust, and longing, and how it is about the choices that they can make. Sometimes lust takes precedence over love, sometimes love takes the bashing for its innocence,¡± Johar said.
Shakun Batra says his movie is quite different from past movies like Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukherji¡¯s ¡°Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna¡± and Yash Chopra¡¯s 1976 feature ¡°Kabhie Kabhie¡± which also dealt with the theme of infidelity.
¡°In those films, what always used to happen is we used to talk about finding a soul mate and then call it infidelity. I don¡¯t think love stories or relationships happen like that. It is not infidelity under the garb of finding the one or finding the true love."
Talking about messy modern-day relationships, Batra added,
¡°We are trying to understand and explore relationships that are outside the conventional boundaries. In today¡¯s time, how relationships unravel today, it is people looking at love differently, it is not always finding the one but what you feel in the moment."
The 39-year-old director, who has turned producer with this film, thanked Karan Johar for letting him look at love with a more microscopic horizon. He added,
¡°He is a great mentor. We have spoken about stories that step out of the conventional romance from the first time we started to talk about films. Love over the years has been oversimplified in Hindi films, and we spoke about how it was time to look at more complex relationships that step into the grey. And this is what the attempt is with ¡®Gehraiyaan.¡¯"
Calling the film his COVID baby, Batra added,
¡°We were very sure we wanted to observe a relationship without the lens of judgment, and Deepika saw it like that. She was the first person to come on board. Then Ananya, Sid and Dhariya happened. Then COVID-19 shoot. We had a roller coaster ride. We had multiple schedules. It is my COVID baby."
Touted as a drama about ¡°complex modern relationships,¡± ¡°Gehraiyaan¡± stars Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, and Dhairya Karwa.
Also starring Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapur in pivotal roles, ¡°Gehraiyaan¡± is scheduled to be released on February 11 on streaming service Prime Video.
