Not A Man Dressed In Saree: Vaani Kapoor On How Her Trans Girl Role Breaks Filmy Stereotype
In Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Vaani Kapoor essays the role of a trans girl. She says the film breaks filmy stereotypes about a transwoman, which was usually portrayed as a man dressed in saree.
Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapooor-starrer Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is making quite a lot of headlines for the film has a woman portraying the role of a trans girl. While many people have pointed why a trans woman hasn't been given the role, Vaani Kapoor says the film breaks the filmy stereotype that a trans girl is a man dressed in saree.
The actor, who turn as Maanvi in the film, has brought her career-best reviews, believes the film has served its purpose of igniting a conversation around trans people and their rights.
"We just wanted to normalise this and break stereotypes. There exists this perception, built over all these years when we were growing up. The reference points we witnessed in films and shows, I think we don¡¯t need to live by it today. That is a wrongful representation," she was quoted as saying by PTI.
"A man dressed in a woman¡¯s saree is not the correct representation of a trans girl. They are as stunning, beautiful and ¡®normal¡¯ as any other cis girl."
Screenwriter Gazal Dhaliwal who is a transwoman herself and has written for films like Lipstick under my Burkha, Qarib Qarib Singlle, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aise Laga and Mismatched among others was so impressed after watching the film that she took to social media to praise the film.
Calling the film a genuine heart and honest effort, the LGBTQ+ activist said that the Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor starrer took her by surprise.
"I was moved by #ChandigarhKareAashiqui. I saw genuine heart and honest effort in this attempt to tell a difficult story - especially within the framework of mainstream Hindi cinema."
