BMC Mayor Volunteers To Work The Night Shift As Nurse At A COVID-Only Facility, Earns Praises

The world is reuniting and finding new ways of healing amid the pandemic. The outbreak and spread of deadly COVID-19 have doubled up the challenges for people and many are struggling to even get their bare-minimum. But there are also stories of heroism and kind gestures that are the silver linings amid the darkness all around.

One such story is of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Kishori Pednekar.

She has decided to return to her old calling -- nursing -- to contribute in the fight against COVID-19.

Pednekar was a nurse before joining politics. She has now decided to join the team of BMC's BYL Nair Hospital to aid the COVID-19 patients in their fight against the virus. She visited the hospital and didn't just boost the morale of the COVID-warriors but also volunteered to double up as a nurse for night shifts.

Reports claim that Pednekar asked the Nair Hospital administration to nominate five students studying in the second and third year of the nursing training course for the Mayor¡¯s award and recommended that these nominated nurses be given Rs 500 as special allowance.

Appreciating her visit to the Nair Hospital in nurse¡¯s attire, Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray tweeted. ¡°We shall fight against Corona and win the battle. Mumbai Mayor @KishoriPednekar has joined as a nurse at the Nair Hospital¡±.

Who said we are short of people to fight Covid? While every one of us, as citizens, is doing our bit fighting covid by staying indoors, this person here, is @kishoripednekar ji. Currently the Mayor of Mumbai, she had started off her career as a nurse. Today as we here stories of how our frontline warriors, the medical staff, are helping us fight covid, she has donned on her original job description to stand side by side with the medical staff at Nair Hospital, now a designated covid hospital and will do the night shift there! There¡¯s no less of such heroes and no less of the fighting spirit! Just till 48 hours ago, she was in self quarantine, absolutely safe but as a precaution since she was visiting every single hot spot and covid clinic from morning to night. Now, as she will serve the city and it¡¯s people as the Mayor during the day and her night shift as medical staff at Nair Hospital begins tonight. Mayor Pednekar had earlier informed that 231 zones are out of the containment zone list after they didn't record a single COVID-19 positive case for the last 14 days. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra is 8,068.

As per the latest update on COVID-19, during the daily briefing by Health Ministry on COVID-19, Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal stated that there is no concrete evidence to show that plasma therapy can cure coronavirus. 937 patients in India have died due to the virus.
