¡®I Was Dragged Out By Collar¡¯, Nawazuddin Revisits Misbehaviour He Faced When He Wasn¡¯t Famous
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has opened up on misbehaviour he faced in his career's early years; says ¡®I Was Dragged Out By Collar¡¯.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui¡¯s career graph has always been inspiring to so many people. From being a supporting spine in blockbuster movies to now heading films as a lead, Nawaz has come a long way. The actor struggled for years until he received large recognition with Anurag Kashyap¡¯s Gangs Of Wasseypur.
Nawazuddin in a recent interview opened up on how he was roughed up for just wanting to eat with A-list actors.
When asked if he suffered misbehaviour, Siddiqui told BBC Hindi, ¡°Of course, thousands of times. Sometimes on set, I would ask the spot boy for water, and he¡¯d completely ignore me. Then you¡¯d have to get it yourself. A lot of productions here segregate the cast and crew during meal times. Junior artists eat separately, the supporting artists have their own space, and the main leads are also separated.¡±
He continued, ¡°On some productions, and I have to credit Yash Raj Films for also doing this, everybody eats together. But a lot of production houses make divisions. I would often try to eat where the main leads were eating, but I¡¯d be dragged out by the collar. I was ego-driven, and I would get angry; I thought actors should be given more respect. And sometimes they¡¯d let me through.¡±
There are several films where Nawazuddin wasn¡¯t paid and he had to find alternatives to make it up.
Nawazuddin recalled not getting paid for Ram Gopal Varma¡¯s Jungle and Shool. The actor had demanded a mere Rs 2500 for his role and that too he wasn¡¯t given. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Nawaz recalled, ¡°I have done small roles in several films, I don¡¯t even tell people about many of them, but I am there.¡±

¡°I needed the money, it was a means of survival for me. I played a waiter in Shool who takes the order from Manoj Bajpayee and Raveena Tandon. The producers said they will pay me Rs 2,500, but I never got it. There have been many such cases, but this one I remember very well.¡±
Nawazuddin further revealed that he used to visit the producer¡¯s office several times for six to seven months to get his Rs 2500, which he never got.
He shared, ¡°But, what I did was, when I visited their office I would get food. So what I started doing is, I would reach their office by lunchtime. And looking at me, they¡¯d ask me ¡®khaana khaayega?¡¯ and I¡¯d say ¡®haa¡¯ (yes), but they¡¯d say in return ¡®paise to nahi milenge par khaana khaa le aaja tu¡¯. And, I did that for a couple of months, and settled my money that way.¡±
