Actress Sarika Started Doing Theatre Because Of Lack Of Good Roles But Soon Ran Out Of Money
Sarika revealed she took a break from Bollywood because of lack of good roles and started doing theatres, which she enjoyed. However, she soon ran out of money during Covid-19 lockdown. She is making her comeback with Modern Love: Mumbai.
Not many people know that veteran actress Sarika started her career in the 1960s as a child actor at the age of five and didn't stop working. Soon, she played pivotal roles in movies like Satte Pe Satta, Kranti, Dil Hi Dil Mein, Shriman Shrimati and many more. In 1986, she and her ex-husband Kamal Haasan became parents to Shruti Haasan, and that's when she took her first sabbatical.
Sarika made her comeback in the mid-2000s.
She featured in movies like Bheja Fry, Manorama Six Feet Under, and Parzania. She wasn't happy with the kind of roles she was offered, and so, she decided to take a break yet again and do something that made her feel content.
"I don¡¯t know, I just thought I was wasting life in a way if you look at it. You wake up every morning, (things) don¡¯t happen, you go to sleep. So I just decided to take one year¡¯s break and not do any work. Go away and do something totally different," she told News 18 in an interview.

While she was enjoying her work, she wasn't getting paid enough.
"That was so brilliant that one year turned into five years. So I was just happy doing all that". However, lockdown interrupted her plans. Soon, she ran out of money.
"Lockdown happened and the money ran out, so where do you go? You go back to acting because in theatre you just get like Rs. 2000-2700 and you can¡¯t do anything so this is why I was not at all there."
Apart from acting, Sarika also worked as costume designer, sound designer and associate director for Kuruthipunal (1995) under Raaj Kamal Films International. In an interview with TOI, she had earlier said, "I am a very simple person, very basic. I don't like jewellery or diamonds. My biggest expense in life is books and music. Whenever I get a signing amount I immediately run to a bookstore where I spend the whole day and my girls say, 'Oh my God, now she will splurge 10000 to 15000'."
After a gap of five years, Sarika is now making a comeback with Modern Love: Mumbai.
In the anthology, she stars in the short titled My Beautiful Wrinkles. She stars alongside Danesh Razvi and Ahsaas Channa in the story which follows Dilbar Sodhi, woman in her 60s played by Sarika, who has a young boy falling in love with her. Modern Love: Mumbai will stream on Amazon Prime Video on May 13.
