After an intense debate, the Lok Sabha passed the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2019 with a large majority on Monday night. Out of the members present, 311 voted in favour of the Bill while 80 voted against it.
For the unversed, the Bill, which amends the Citizenship Act of 1955, seeks to provide Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Since the bill has been passed, it has become a topic of discussion on social media. While some are supporting and hailing the move, there are others who are totally against it. The fact that only Muslims were left out from the list of persecuted minorities rubbed many in the wrong way. Many have been saying that it is because of BJP's anti-Muslim political stance.
Celebrities including Swara Bhasker and actor Siddharth also gave their opinion on Twitter. Here's what they wrote:
Deeply ashamed that Edapadi Palanisamy represents my state and our people. Supporting the #CAB shows his true colours, his lack of integrity and his desperate need to remain powerful at any cost. You will all be held accountable. Enjoy your temp power till then. #IndiaRejectsCAB

#Jayalalithaa would have never supported #CAB. How the #AIADMK has crashed in its ethos, in her absence!

I do not want my hard earned money as a taxpayer to be spent in funding this sick bigoted NRC/CAB project! #CAB #CABAgainstConstitution #CABBill #NRCBill #IndiaAgainstCAB

I don¡¯t know who would be interested in #CitizensAmendmentBill when the country is unsafe for women, children, differently abled and minorities, when people can¡¯t afford food, don¡¯t have basic rights like those to breathe clean air or drink clean water.

Moreover, there is abysmal health services, malnutrition, education facilities, rampant corruption & crime, disrespect for modernity and contemporary paradigms of necessary change. So why are news channels @TimesNow, @republic and several other media doing this...

...injustice of wasting precious time that can be devoted to creating awareness about important issues on a stupid bill, deliberately tabled to deflect from real concerns, which can be ignored. What do our politicians think? That all #Indians are fools?

Meanwhile, as soon as the bill was passed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twiter to express his happiness, "Delighted that Lok Sabha has passed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 after a rich & extensive debate. I thank the various MPs and parties that supported the Bill. This Bill is in line with India¡¯s centuries-old ethos of assimilation and belief in humanitarian values."
He also lauded Home Minister Amit Shah in another tweet as he wrote, "I would like to especially applaud Home Minister Amit Shah Ji for lucidly explaining all aspects of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. He also gave elaborate answers to the various points raised by respective MPs during the discussion in the Lok Sabha."
