3 mind-blowing details in Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap's Maharaja you probably missed!
Know about hidden symbolism in Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap's Maharaja. From Nallasiva's snake-like traits to the shattered mother-child showpiece, here are the three mind-blowing details you probably missed.
Remember the monkey story in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal? Was it about an uncontrollable animal, or did it mirror the protagonist's own struggles? And remember Ved's three-way mirror in Tamasha? It symbolised his multiple personalities. Movies often communicate beyond their dialogues; the sets, props, and costumes form a visual language that resonates with audiences on a subconscious level. Sometimes you're able to notice them, sometimes they just stay in your subconscious mind. This also reflects how brilliant the art of filmmaking is.
If you have watched Vijay Sethupathi's much-talked-about film Maharaja, which also stars Anurag Kashyap, did you notice such examples of symbolism? Someone on X (formerly called Twitter) pointed out how symbolism was used brilliantly in the Tamil action-thriller directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, and people are completely bowled over.
Snake symbolised Nallasiva's personality
Nallasiva (Singampuli) is a Police informer but he doesn't let anyone know that he is also a criminal - just like the snake who has been hiding at the police station for so long. When Nallasiva's real personality is revealed, the snake also comes out from hiding. The fact that Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) picks it up while everyone else steps out also reflects the storyline on how he was trying to get even with him. Is this also the reason why Nallasiva keeps sniffing in the movie? Is that equivalent to hiss sound of a snake?
film lays hints on this line very subtely. it shows nallashiva doing that sniff sound. it's useless in the whole screenplay if you see the storyline & suspense. it has no value. but there is a good reason to it. he is actually making an equivalent sound of snake's hissing. + pic.twitter.com/R7EFS8dRq7

The mother-child showpiece
Remember when Maharaja takes it in his hand, it breaks immediately reflecting how his happy family shattered after the accident. The mother's statue breaks and falls down while the child's portion remains in his hands. That's exactly what happened happened in Maharaja's life. The makers wanted us to believe this so that we are completely bowled over after watching the climax - that had a different story altogether. In the end, the child part of the showpiece also falls off from Maharaja's hands - thus reflecting the true story.

Jyothi's footprints
When you have immense regret for something or someone, you fall at their feet. That's what Selvam (Anurag Kashyap) did as he jumped off the building and took his own life. The blood coming out of his body fills up Jyothi's footprints that were left on the cement.
you fall at their feet. seeking forgiveness & redemption. selva is that guy who has unknowingly inflicted the worst pain to his daughter. he dies with regret in his blood. he can't fall at her feet now, but his blood oozing out from his head can. & it falls, on her feet (imprint) pic.twitter.com/RLRiXuIJNd
