Forrest Gump is one of those films that stays with you long after you have watched it. It is one of the Tom Hanks iconic roles for which he also won his second Oscar award. But did you know he didn't get paid for the role?
Much like a box of chocolate, producers didn't know the movie will gain the status of a cult film. They didn't expect the film, which won six Oscar awards, to be a hit. Despite this, Tom Hanks chose to take a portion of the film's earnings as his salary.
Not only that, for two iconic and crucial scenes, Hanks paid from his pocket when the money got tight. One of the scenes included Forrest¡¯s iconic run across America.
"And (Zemeckis) said 'Well, this run is going to cost X amount of dollars.' And it wasn't cheap. And I said 'ok'. He said, 'You and I are going to split that amount, and we're going to give it back (to Paramount). We'll give you the money back, but you guys (Paramount) are going to have to share the profits a little bit more.' Which the studio said 'Fabulous, great. ok.' And it was good for us, too."
So, Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis paid for the scenes and were ensured to get a larger sum pf profit. It was a gamble since people thought that the film wouldn't be a hit.
What happened next? Hanks got $65 million (Rs 478 crore) as his share, which was more than the budget of the movie, which was $55 millions (Rs 4,04 crore). The film went on to earn $678.2 million (about 5000 crore) worldwide.
