Gwyneth Paltrow has been urged to not spread misinformation after she claimed that kombucha and kimchi can cure COVID-19.
Prof Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England said, "In the last few days I see Gwyneth Paltrow is unfortunately suffering from the effects of Covid. We wish her well, but some of the solutions she¡¯s recommending are really not the solutions we¡¯d recommend in the NHS."
"We need to take long Covid seriously and apply serious science. All influencers who use social media have a duty of responsibility and a duty of care around that."
He added that misinformation is also spreading along with the virus and mutating as well. "Like the virus, misinformation carries across borders and it mutates and it evolves. So I think YouTube and other social media platforms have a real responsibility and opportunity here.
The Iron Man actress had written on her latest blogpost on website Goop that COVID-19 could be treated with intuitive fasting, herbal cocktails and infrared sauna. The actress caught the disease earlier and had been suffering from "long-tail fatigue and brain fog" since then.
"So I turned to one of the smartest experts I know in this space, the functional medicine practitioner Dr. Will Cole. After he saw all my labs, he explained that this was a case where the road to healing was going to be longer than usual", she said.
Adding that she is quite careful about what is going in her body, she said, "So I've been cooking a lot, and some of it is really delicious: I made scallops with crispy capers and sage the other day, asparagus with bacon vinaigrette, and some little artichokes with stuffed herbs and garlic. I¡¯ve even found a great sugar-free kimchi and kombucha".
"Everything I'm doing feels good, like a gift to my body. I have energy, I'm working out in the mornings, and I'm doing an infrared sauna as often as I can, all in service of healing," she said.
