In October 2021, Dave was accused of being a transphobic after his Netflix special, The Closer, was made available for streaming.
As per a report in DailyMail, comedian Chris Rock was also present at the event and had joked about the incident. He said, "Was that Will Smith?"
Netizens are also reacting strongly to the incident. While some are calling 'Chris Rock the catalyst of it all', others are standing up for comedians and their freedom of speech. A Twitter user wrote, "I¡¯m kind of surprised it took this long. Stand up comedy now officially an extreme sport. This is @TheAcademy¡¯s fault. #WillSmith should have been arrested on site when he assaulted @chrisrock. It¡¯s not a black thing or a white thing, it¡¯s a civilized society thing."

For the unversed, Will Smith made headlines for all the wrong reasons last month when he walked up to the stage and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian cracked a joke on Jada Pinkett Smith. Will had later issued a public apology to Chris Rock and was also seen tearing up during his acceptance speech at the event. Further, the actor resigned from The Academy after he was banned for 10 years from the Oscars or any other academy event.
