Oscars remain to be one of the most prestigious and reputed award ceremonies. The Academy Awards don¡¯t always get it right, but the best movies of the year get the nominations at least.

1. The Trial of the Chicago 7

3. Promising Young Woman

The Crown guest star Emerald Fennell not only wrote but also directed this unique #MeToo revenge comedy story starring Carey Mulligan. Since the time the film premiered a Sundance Film Festival, it has become the talk of the town, especially among the critics for its award potential.

4. The Father

This Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman starrer is a heartwarming story about parental aging as well as progressive memory loss. Chlo¨¦ Zhao has become the first woman of color to be nominated for best director for this movie about modern-day American nomads. The film premiered at Venice Film Festival and now its critics' favorite. The film has been dubbed the Academy Award's frontrunner.

6. Sound Of Metal

Watch it for Riz Ahmed's knockout performance. Ahmed, for the unversed, is the first-ever Muslim ever to be nominated for the Best actor's trophy. The film is about a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing. His worried girlfriend takes him to rehab for deaf hoping it will prevent relapse and help him adapt to his new life. He learns to reconcile himself to his new life.

7. Judas and the Black Messiah

Nominated for: Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Original Song

Watch this film as it made history as the first Best Picture nominee with all Black producers. The film chronicles the real-life events surrounding the FBI¡¯s infiltration of the Black Panther Party. The film is impressive, explosive, and gut-wrenching.

8. Minari

Nominated for: Best Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, Score, and Original Screenplay.

Chadwick Boseman's last film is indeed special. The movie has won him many awards already. He has also been nominated posthumously for Oscars. Boseman may likely win the award too for the movie based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The film focus on Ma Rainey, who is an influential blues singer. It dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago.

The film has a brilliant ensemble consisting of Kingsley Ben Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom, Jr. The film imagines a meeting between four iconic figures in Black history where each of them shares their convictions, hopes and divergent opinions about achieving racial equality in the Civil Rights movement.
