2 Years After A Disappointing Finale, Revisit Fond Memories Of GoT With These 36 Iconic Moments

If the past two years have felt like a blur to you, then you are not alone. While life threw all of us off-track, the one thing that contributed in keeping our sanity intact was online content.

Amid a plethora of new movie releases and web series garnering our attention, it recently struck me that it¡¯s been two whole years since the most-loved show Game Of Thrones ended! It still feels like yesterday when we were fighting over spoilers and conspiracy theories.

Every once in a while some meme or the other, does remind fans how DB Weiss and David Benioff shattered millions of hearts with their not so satisfying finale. 2 years on, if you keep that aside for a minute and contemplate the decade-long journey of Game Of Thrones, it still is the most spectacular show of our time with no worthy opponent to compete for the ace position.

Therefore, to commemorate the phenomena that this show was, here¡¯s taking a look at 36 moments that still manage to mesmerise us and then some.

1. Viserys¡¯ golden crown

Khal Drogo killing his brother-in-law for insulting his wife Daenerys was both romantic and frightening at the same time.

2. Tyrion Lannister slapping Joffrey Baratheon

You¡¯d be lying if a sadistic part of you didn¡¯t enjoy Tyrion Lannister slapping the hell out of his nephew Joffrey Baratheon. Full marks to Jack Gleeson for making us hate him right from the start with his super convincing performance.

3. Ned Stark¡¯s beheading

We were so innocent and na?ve during the course of season one, weren't we? We were unconditionally rooting for our hero Ned, when D&D swept the rug from under our feet by killing the protagonist so early on. This definitely made us loathe Joffrey even more than we already did.

4. Khal Drogo¡¯s unfortunate death

The undefeated Khal who was supposed to win the seven kingdoms for his beloved wife Danny met an unfortunate end. Despite such a big sacrifice, Danny couldn¡¯t save her husband and son. This is definitely one of the most disturbing moments from the lot.

5. Melisandre¡¯s true identity reveal

The red woman¡¯s beauty and cunningness were both endearing and loathsome. Her involvement in Stannis¡¯ decisions did piss many of us. What came as the biggest surprise was the moment when she removed her ruby choker and we were introduced to an old woman who was said to be ¡®several centuries old¡¯.

6. Birth of the dragons

When Daenerys stepped into Drogo¡¯s burning pyre, our hearts broke. Most of us thought that this was the end of the Targaryens. However, little did we know that she would become a mother to three dragons and create history.

7. Daenerys acquiring the Unsullied from the slave master and Dracarys!

It was at this very moment that Danny earned the title of ¡®Breaker of chains¡¯. She not only freed the soldiers but she also immolated the slave master by ordering her dragon to breathe fire on him.

8. The Red Wedding - The Lannisters send their regards

The whole episode is unforgettable and mostly for the wrong reasons. Walder Frey and Lord Bolton¡¯s ultimate betrayal scared the living daylights out of us. This was also a revelation for most of us that GoT isn¡¯t a predictable show. Every character¡¯s life was hanging by a thread. We still hear Catelyn Stark¡¯s scream every time this episode is mentioned.

9. Joffrey¡¯s death - The Purple Wedding

If the red wedding broke our hearts, the purple one proved to be oddly satisfying. Just when we couldn¡¯t bear Tyrion getting humiliated by his cruel nephew any more, he goes purple and falls down to never get back up ever again. The poisoning of Joffrey Baratheon was catastrophic yet fulfilling.

10. The Mountain and Viper¡¯s duel - Trial by combat

When Oberyn Martell aka Viper steps in to fight for Tyrion¡¯s freedom, we were all taken by surprise. When his ulterior motive of avenging his sister¡¯s death came to light, it all made sense. When Viper almost won the duel after beating the Mountain, we couldn't help but cheer for him. However, he got way too cocky for his own good. Mountain changed the game when he overpowered him and smashed his face to death. Literally!

11. Tyrion murdering his father Tywin Lannister and Shae

Tyrion¡¯s character arc was probably one of the most interesting ones. Before becoming a fugitive, he ensured that revenge was taken even if it meant killing his own father or the love of his life for betraying him. The way he choked Shae to death and killed Tywin while he was on the toilet with Joffrey¡¯s crossbow definitely made our jaws drop in awe.

12. Night King raising the dead at Hardhome

Jon Snow and party¡¯s first tryst with the white walkers was horrifying to say the least. It turned even more dark when the Night King resurrected the dead and turned them into wights. That was the very moment when Jon and us realised the real power of the wights.

13. Stannis burning his daughter Shireen

Another heart wrenching moment from the show was Shireen Baratheon¡¯s death. Stannis sacrificed his daughter for the iron throne on Lady Melisandre¡¯s suggestion. No surprises that instead of doing any good, this brutal deed just brought him more misfortune.

14. Drogon rescuing Danny from the pit in Meereen

When Daenerys is ambushed by the Sons of Harpy in the pit, we thought that this was the moment when Danny would bite the dust. However, Drogon arrives at a crucial moment to save his mother. This was also the first time that Danny gets to ride on him. A thrilling watch!

15. Cersei¡¯s walk of atonement

Septa Unella did something that no one ever could. She broke down Cersei. Her walk of atonement and Unella¡¯s ¡®Shame¡¯ singsong was quite shocking to watch.

16. Jon Snow¡¯s murder and his resurrection

The worst cliffhanger of the entire series, Jon Snow¡¯s death came across as the biggest shock. More so because Olly was a part of the conspiracy as well. All hope was lost but then entered the Red Woman who brought him back from the dead.

17. Sam slayed a white walker

Samwell Tarly was Jon Snow¡¯s closest friend and probably the most undervalued character. He was the first one to kill a white walker. It was him who discovered the way to deal with the wights.

18. Jon and Sansa¡¯s reunion

When Sansa arrives at Castle Black and sees Jon for the first time after their separation, it made our hearts skip a beat. This emotional moment gave us hope that maybe all will be well.

19. Hodor¡¯s death

Hold the door! Watching the adorable giant die wasn¡¯t easy. To know the story behind him saying Hodor all the time was bittersweet. Hodor died for his master and proved his loyalty till his last breath.

20. Battle Of The Bastards - Rickon¡¯s death and Jon Snow¡¯s army getting rescued by Knights of the Vale

It won't be wrong to say that Battle Of The Bastards was the best battle of Game Of Thrones. Right from Rickon¡¯s death to the rescue of Jon Snow¡¯s army by the Knights of Vale, each and every moment of this episode was nail-biting.

21. Sansa kills Ramsay by feeding him to his own hounds

It all came to a full circle, when Sansa fed Ramsay to his own hounds after he lost the Battle of the Bastards. That smirk at the end was so satisfying to watch.

22. Tyrion named as Hand to queen Daenerys

For a Lannister to earn the trust of a Targaryen and become the hand was no easy feat. The bond that they shared was pure and they had immense respect for each other. However, it all went downhill after Danny turned into a mad queen.

23. Cersei blowing up the Sept and The Sparrows

We expected nothing less from the badass queen! At the trial where she was to be punished by the sparrows, she not only skipped it but also blew the place up with wildfire. This massacre killed all her enemies at once but she also lost her son Tommen who couldn¡¯t bear the death of his wife Margaery and committed suicide.

24. Lynna Mormont¡¯s speech

The youngest one of the lot, Lynna was fierce and a brave hero. Her speech in support of making Jon Snow King of the North was iconic. Even her death was that of a hero.

¡°Your son was butchered at the Red Wedding, Lord Manderly. But you refuse the call. You swore allegiance to House Stark, Lord Glover. But in their hour of greatest need, you refuse the call. And you, Lord Kerwin, your father was skinned alive by Ramsay Bolton, still, you refuse the call. But House Mormont remembers. The North remembers. We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark. I don¡¯t care if he¡¯s a bastard. Ned Stark¡¯s blood runs through his veins. He¡¯s my king, from this day until his last day!¡±

25. Walder Frey¡¯s death

Arya Stark did the unimaginable. Not only did she feed Walder Frey¡¯s sons to him, she wiped out the entire house of Frey with poisoned wine.

26. Olenna Tyrell confession that she killed Joffrey

Tell Cersei it was me! Another badass character, Lady Olenna Tyrell embraced death in the most sassy manner. Right after drinking the poison, she confessed to killing Cersei and Jaime Lannister¡¯s son Joffrey and also cleared that she had no regrets whatsoever.

27. Sansa and Arya¡¯s reunion

Theirs was an emotional reunion. The two sisters finally met each other after years in their family crypt in front of their father Ned Stark¡¯s statue. Their exchange has an underlying banter which was a call back to the bond that they shared before separating from each other.

28. The Loot train attack

The way Danny and her posse ambushed the Lannister army after their victory at the Highgarden was enthralling to watch. The Dothrakis slaughtered their enemies and when Danny entered with Drogon all hell broke loose.

29. Viserion killed by Night King and his resurrection as an ice dragon

Another setback came in the form of Viserion¡¯s death in season 7. Daenerys reaches beyond the wall with her babies to rescue Jon Snow and his boys from the wights. During this exchange the Night King killed Viserion with an ice spear. As if this wasn¡¯t enough, once the battle was over, the wights scooped out Viserion¡¯s body from the ice water and resurrected him as the ice dragon.

30. The Dragonpit meeting

In the finale season, all the houses come together to strategize for The Great War. It was here when Tyrion and Jon introduced a wight to the Lannisters. The look of fear on Cersei¡¯s face was satisfying to watch. As uncomfortable as the meeting was, it sure brought everyone in one frame.

31. Littlefinger¡¯s execution

No one could have anticipated how Arya and Sansa orchestrated Littlefinger aka Lord Baelish¡¯s execution. Under the pretext of confronting Arya, Baelish was brought to the main hall and was put on trial unexpectedly.

32. Brienne of Tarth becoming the only female knight in the Seven Kingdoms

Brienne finally received her much-deserved knighthood the night before the battle, it depicted a non-lead woman taking charge in Game of Thrones and became one of the most powerful moments of the show.

33. Cleganebowl

The battle of the Clegane brothers was anticipated throughout the show. When it finally happened, it ended on a bittersweet note. After sparring with each other, the two brothers embraced death together when they fell from the tower into the fire.

34. Arya killing the Night King

All the training that Arya underwent came to fruition when she managed to destroy the Night King with a simple yet effective trick of hands. When all of us had lost hope that the dead would remain undefeated, Arya sneaked in and ended it with her graceful move.

35. Danny turning into a mad queen

The final battle for the seven kingdoms saw Danny take a full 360 degree and turn into a mad queen. Even though the Lannisters accepted defeat, she still went into a total destructive mode and wreaked havoc in King¡¯s landing.

36. Sansa¡¯s crowning as the Queen in the north

After Bran was declared the King, Sansa took a bold move and appealed for Winterfell to not be included under the King¡¯s rule. She was then declared the queen of Winterfell. Her coronation ceremony was empowering.
