Everything From "The Matrix: Resurrections" Trailer That Only A True Blue Fan Would Notice!
The continuation to Matrix Trilogy is officially here and true to its name, it¡¯s ¡°resurrecting¡± the old vibes and notions from the films released a generation ago. The trailer for ¡°The Matrix: Resurrections¡± not just brought back breathtaking Keanu Reeves but cracked up heads with tons of references and callbacks to the previous films, which, in turn, have redefined the sci-fi genre. Here¡¯s everything you can gather from the mind-bending trailer ...Read More
What¡¯s Going On In The Matrix: Resurrections?
The Matrix: Revolutions ended with closing curtains. Though it left room for an open-ended cinematic world to explore, there was a definite closure to The Wachowski¡¯s planned storyline. At the end of the third film of the franchise, [*major spoiler alert*], Neo successfully reaches a deal with the machine leader, Deus Ex Machina. The deal was that the Matrix will be rebooted; however, humans who desire to will be offered a chance to leave the Matrix. But, Oracle also states that the ¡°peace will last as long as it can¡±, thus ending the film on a note that leaves room for multiple interpretations and an opportunity for makers to extend the story.
Now, it seems like, the peace has lasted long enough. The trailer begins with a newly, reinvigorated and freshly designed Matrix in form of modern-day San Francisco. We are then introduced to Thomas Anderson (yes, Neo is once again Thomas Anderson) seeking therapy for ¡°cryptographic visions¡±. And from thereon the trailer takes us in and out of this nearly perfect simulation through immersive graphics and some hardcore Matrix-style action.
Have machines broken peace with humans? Is someone else controlling Matrix? Are these new characters mere simulations or real characters? And how are *major spoiler again* Neo and Trinity alive since they literally ¡®sacrificed¡¯ themselves to bring down the wrath of machines in Revolutions? Well, these are just a few questions we have after watching the trailer and shall only be answered when either a more detailed trailer arrives or the film itself releases.
Here¡¯s what we gathered from the trailer, which would give fans a kick of nostalgia and make them crave more for this upcoming continuation to the trilogy:
1. The Therapist¡¯s Glasses
The trailer shows Neo taking therapy sessions with a character played by Neil Patrick Harris. What¡¯s particularly detailing here is that the therapist is wearing glasses with a blue frame. It could be the indication towards the Blue Pill that allows the person who takes it to remain in ignorance of the reality and stay back in their simulated life.
It could be that Neil Patrick Harris¡¯s character is working for machines to repress Neo¡¯s memories and contain his influence and power as The One. This detail further intrigues as we see Neo¡¯s prescription pills to be blue in color, which he consumes in large quantity.
2. Morpheus?
Laurence Fishburne isn¡¯t coming back to play the iconic character Morpheus who leads the human resistance against the machines and helps Neo out of his simulation in the first film. However, looks like the makers have come up with a version of the character to show up.
Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen was one of the earliest actors to be cast in the film. Until the trailer arrived, his character was a mystery, but those glasses kind of give it away. Though it¡¯s still not clear if he¡¯s really Morpheus, a version of him, or a simulation of him is really unclear. But those round glasses give really great vibes to the character and it would lovely to see how Abdul-Mateen would bring him to life if that¡¯s whom he is playing.
3. Trinity Meets Neo Again
In the original trilogy, both Trinity and Neo gave their lives to defeat Agent Smith and establish a two-way peace with the machine king. However, the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections see Neo and Trinity meeting each other as if they are meeting for the first time. And this time, both the characters are in their simulation forms, unlike the first film, where Trinity was already out of the Matrix long before Neo came into the fold with Morpheus and the rest of the resistance.
Who¡¯s this new iteration of Trinity? And is Neo here truly resurrected by the machines? These are some questions one has to find out by watching the movie.
4. The Red Pill - Time To Fly
Once again giving Morpheus vibes, Yahya Abdul-Mateen takes us back to an important scene from the first film, when Laurence Fishburne¡¯s Morpheus offers Red Pill to Neo.
Just like Fishburne¡¯s, Abdul-Mateen¡¯s Morpheus (probably) says, time to fly, calling back to the time when Neo first awakened is powers of The One, leading to a lasting resistance against machines and the wrath of Agent Smith.
5. The Dojo
Remember Neo training with Morpheus to awaken his powers as The One, as well as becoming an expert in physical combat? Lana Wachowski has recreated the scene in almost exactly a similar manner, where Keanu Reeves gets into a training fight with Yahya Abdul-Mateen (further nearly confirming the theory that he plays Morpheus).
Abdul-Mateen dresses in a red robe while Keanu is in his John Wick-styled attire, and as their forces collide, we realize that they are in a simulated location, which shatters after their collision, thus, probably making him realize f his reality. It¡¯s possible this would be the moment when Thomas Anderson will become Neo once again.
6. Alice Through The Looking Glass
In the film, Neo is being handed over a book by a mysterious woman and that book is Alice Through The Looking Glass by Lewis Carrol. The book depicts the epitome of imaginary creations from the author¡¯s mind wherein the protagonist is transported into a magical land, as in, a simulation of a fantastical world.
The Matrix took this book as an inspiration as it also dealt with a premise where the film¡¯s protagonists fight to discover their true world, free of simulations and a controlled environment. This is a minute detail but a major trivia for fans who perceive The Matrix, not as a movie but as a polarizing depiction of an AI-dominated world.
7. Following the White Rabbit
Talking of Alice Through The Looking Glass, the first Matrix movie had a sequence that directly referenced the book. In the movie, Neo is asked to follow Dujour, the lady with a rabbit tattoo which leads to his first meeting with Trinity. He is asked to ¡°follow the white rabbit¡±.
The scene with a close-up at the book¡¯s title could be a metaphorical reference to the similarities between the book¡¯s and the film¡¯s plot. In Alice In Wonderland, Alice falls down the rabbit hole to enter the wonderland. In the original movie, Neo also followed a rabbit (though on tattoo) to learn the truth of his world and enter a new, truer reality.
8. Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Sati or Oracle?
In The Matrix: Revolutions, the character of Sati was introduced as a novelty program in exile, resultant of love between two simulated programs. Sati is being sheltered in that film by Oracle for she believes the kid could have an impact on the future of both humans and machines.
Considering the character¡¯s ethnic background and Priyanka¡¯s look in the film, it¡¯s being theorized she is playing the adult version of Sati, or probably, a new version of Oracle herself. Though the actress doesn¡¯t appear that significantly in the trailer; however if this notion is to believe, she¡¯d have an impactful role in the movie.
9. Agents
After Agent Smith rebelled against his own creators, it seemed like the machines would be done with Agent programs who acted as enforcers of their will in the Matrix. However, the Resurrections trailer has brought back the programs once again acting on orders directly from Deus Ex Machina, or whosoever is now running the game.
The trailer also featured this agent changing shapes, which means that the programs are now upgraded to infiltrate the faulty areas in the simulation more covertly and fix the loops accordingly. It will be interesting to witness what form these programs take in Resurrections and what role they could have in the overall story.
10. More ¡°White Rabbit¡± Connection
The trailer featured Jessica Henwick as a currently unknown character wh also sports a white rabbit. Neo can be seen in the trailer following her through traversing a mirror and probably realizing on his way that he is trapped in a simulated reality. Can¡¯t really say what character Henwick is playing but the way she is running from Agents in the film¡¯s trailer surely confirms she is on the good side.
Another ¡°White Rabbit¡± reference is the song played throughout the trailer. It¡¯s called White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. The song begins with ¡°One pill makes you larger, and one makes you small¡±, a direct call back to the two types of pills that allow one to distinguish between the simulated reality and the real world. The song¡¯s lyrics are further intended to liberate one¡¯s sense, something which is the core essence of The Matrix movies.
11. Bullet Time Action
Once again, The Matrix: Resurrections will bring back its signature slo-mo bullet-time action with Keanu Reeves manipulating time in the Matrix to dodge off bullet attacks. The original films were full of such crazy action sequences and with Resurrections, Lana Wachowski is taking things to a new level.
While we are aware that The One was easily able to fend off bullets, in the trailer for the new film, Neo, who seems to have regained control of his powers is able to fend off an incoming blaster rocket which he diverts towards an enemy helicopter. It¡¯s a hint towards the point in the movie where Neo and Trinity have regained their memories and have learned the truth of the Matrix, leading to an epic confrontation between man and the machine.
12. The Statement of The Matrix
The original Matrix movie, besides being a sci-fi entertainer, was also a critical statement on the then newly emerging technological era, where people had begun to subject themselves to the facilities of the web and the Internet, which was fairly new to most of the world. Fast forward two decades, the world we live in is truly dominated by machines in various aspects, and a number of manual jobs are either fully or partially handled by AI-powered machinery.
In The Matrix: Resurrections, we can see Neo in what seems like an elevator full of people staring at their smartphones, tabs, and all sorts of electronic devices. This scene is a statement on the social commentary of Resurrections, hinting at several inspirations Lana must¡¯ve taken from modern-day themes like data privacy, social media presence, technical reliance, etc.
13. Machines vs. Real World
The trailer featured an exclusive and clear glimpse at the heavily modernized Machine City alongside the glimpse of what seemed like the ruins of the world. While Machine City was glaring red with bots and human pods, the ruins were shown to be fairly blue.
This again is a polarization between the reality and simulation one can distinguish between via taking the red or a blue pill. The revitalized Machine City may be an indication of the machine¡¯s regained control over the world which had led them to discard the peace deal, giving rise to a new form of Agents and ultimately a new rebellion.
14. Jonathan Groff¡¯s Surprisingly Familiar Appearance
Jonathan Groff is a new addition to the cast of Resurrections and his appearance in the trailer seems to hold the key to the truth. He blatantly uses the word ¡°Matrix¡± in front of Neo telling him how he¡¯s back to ¡°where it all started all those years ago¡±. This statement implies that Groff¡¯s character isn¡¯t a normal simulation of a human but an essential enforcer within the Matrix. Moreover, it¡¯s not just a return for Neo to the Matrix, it¡¯s also Keanu Reeves¡¯ return to the place which made him an international star and so is the same for Wachowskis.
His large chair and a fancy cabin-like simulation where he sits makes him an important figure. Whoever he is playing, his character may be the primary antagonist in the film and he could be a new version of Smith or the Architect himself. The truth shall be revealed soon.
The Matrix: Resurrections¡¯ trailer proves that the film, despite being a modern sequel to the original story, will retain its roots and will surely be a treat for this new generation. The Matrix: Resurrections won¡¯t just expand the famous trilogy, it would also bridge the gap between the two generations separated by this fourth installment and the two-decades-old original trilogy.
The Matrix: Resurrections will release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
