For the unversed, the 48-star flag was in effect for 47 years until 1959 when the 49-star version became official after Alaska became the first non-contiguous territory to become a state. The 50-star flag was ordered by then-president Eisenhower in 1959, after Hawaii became a member of the union, and was adopted in 1960. It is the longest-used version of the U.S. flag and has been in use for over 63 years.
The tweet has kickstarted a debate on Twitter. Here's what everyone's saying.

I can argue that this is done intentionally as the colored scenes were from Oppenheimer's perspective, while the black and white scenes were from another. This would be a memory of Oppenheimer from his present day memory which does have 50 states on the flag.

You want to show your film on the biggest, clearest screen imaginable, you¡¯re gonna get folks noticing every detail and this one is pretty obviously wrong. lol 48 state flag isn¡¯t staggered, it¡¯s gridded. I¡¯ve not seen the film, but I would have clocked this, too. https://t.co/YjREPYTumI

Nolan is gonna come out and go "Erm Actually ? the Black and White scenes are are objective while the color scenes are subjective as they are Oppenheimer remembering his life, he remembers the flag as what it is now as he is recalling the memory not what it looked like then." https://t.co/VpfBP0QTPz
