'Parts Of Brain Are Missing', Emilia Clarke Survived 2 Brain Aneurysms During Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke suffered two brain aneurysms while filming Game Of Thrones in 2011 and 2013. She said that part of her brain is damaged and it's remarkable that she is able to speak.
Emilia Clarke essayed the powerful role of Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons, who was one of the most iconic characters of Game Of Thrones. Not only was she a gutsy woman on the show, she indeed is quite courageous and brave in real life too.
The actress recently opened up on how she suffered two brain aneurysms while filming the show in 2011 and 2013.
She said that part of her brain is damaged and it's remarkable that she is able to speak.
Emilia Clarke, on BBC One's Sunday Morning, was quoted as saying, "The amount of my brain that is no longer usable ¨C it¡¯s remarkable that I am able to speak, sometimes articulately, and live my life completely normally with absolutely no repercussions."
It all started after she collapsed at the gym following a severe headache. That was the beginning of her heath struggles which led to two life-threatening brain aneurysms after Game Of Thrones season 1.
"I am in the really, really, really small minority of people that can survive that," she said adding about the brain scan, "There¡¯s quite a bit missing! Which always makes me laugh.
"Because strokes, basically, as soon as any part of your brain doesn¡¯t get blood for a second, it¡¯s gone. And so the blood finds a different route to get around but then whatever bit it¡¯s missing is therefore gone."
For the unversed, brain aneurysms is an abnormal bulge or ballooning in the wall of a blood vessel.
In an essay written for The New Yorker, Emilia Clarke says she thought she would die. "In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die," she said.
After the surgery, a condition called aphasia set in, meaning she could not communicate and feared her acting career was over.
When after the first surgery, she was warned about second smaller aneurysm on the other side of her brain, she could see her life ahead, ¡°and it wasn¡¯t worth living,¡± she said. "I am an actor; I need to remember my lines. Now I couldn¡¯t recall my name."
The second surgery was gruesome as her skull was opened up for it. ¡°I looked as though I had been through a war more gruesome than any Daenerys experienced.¡±
After the second surgery, it was difficult to shoot for Game Of Thrones.
"Season 2 would be my worst. I didn¡¯t know what Daenerys was doing. If I am truly being honest, every minute of every day I thought I was going to die."
In 2019, Emilia Clarke launched a charity, SameYou, that supports people recovering from brain injuries and strokes.
