Golden Globes 2025: Shogun beats Squid Game Season 2 for Best Drama Series title, Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai win big
Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won their first-ever Golden Globes, with Sanada taking home the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series and Sawai winning Best Actress in a Drama Series. Their show, Shogun, also emerged victorious in the Best Drama Series category, edging out tough competition from other popular shows, including Squid Game Season 2.
Shogun had a successful run at the 2025 Golden Globes, taking home the award for Best Drama Television Series. The show's leads, Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, also won their first Golden Globes in the Best Female and Best Male categories, respectively. Anna Sawai won for her portrayal of Toda Mariko, and Hiroyuki Sanada took home the award for his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga. The historical epic beat out some of the most critically acclaimed drama shows, including Netflix's biggest series, Squid Game Season 2, to bag the coveted honor.
Shogun wins big at the 2025 Golden Globes
After making history with a record 18 Emmy wins in 2024, the non-English language drama has now taken home the top honour for Best Drama Television Series at Golden Globes. The Samurai series had received four nods in the competition and was up against the most notable shows for the Best TV Drama category. The nominees in the category included Peacock's The Day of the Jackal, Netflix's The Diplomat, Prime Video's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, and Netflix's Squid Game.

Mirroring their Emmy wins, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, the leads of Shogun, won the Golden Globes for Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress, respectively.

Tadanobu Asano, meanwhile, won Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for his portrayal of Kashigi Yabushige in the epic series.

Hiroyuki Sanada's message for aspiring talent
Hiroyuki Sanada gave a heartfelt acceptance speech, thanking the Golden Globes for recognising his work and expressing his gratitude to be among such talented nominees. Sanada then went on to thank FX, Disney+, and the entire cast and crew of Shogun, acknowledging their contributions to his success. He also took a moment to express his appreciation for the people in his life, saying, "I'd love to say thank you to everyone who has been in my life. All of you have brought me here."
Sanada also shared a word of wisdom for aspiring actors worldwide, saying, "To the young actors and creators in the world: Please be yourself. Believe in yourself and never give up. Good luck.§

Squid Game Season 2 loses Golden Globes
Korean survival series Squid Game Season 2 earned just one nod, Best Television Series〞Drama, this year, and lost it to Shogun. The Netflix phenomenon scripted history back in 2022 when O Yeong-su claimed Korea's first Golden Globe Award for his role. With its latest season, the show scripted history as one of the few shows to secure a nomination prior to its release.
