Priyanka Chopra-backed film To Kill a Tiger, which was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, lost to "20 Days in Mariupol." The film 'To Kill a Tiger' was directed by Nisha Pahuja, a Delhi native currently living in Toronto.
To Kill a Tiger
The movie chronicles Ranjit's difficult quest for justice on behalf of his 13-year-old daughter, who was kidnapped and then sexually abused by three men.
"Ranjit goes to the police, and the men are arrested. But Ranjit's relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges. A cinematic documentary, 'To Kill a Tiger' follows Ranjit's uphill battle to find justice for his child," according to To Kill a Tiger official website.
Priyanka Chopra, Dev Patel, and Mindy Kaling became executive producers of the Oscar-nominated documentary.
20 Days in Mariupol
The film 20 Days in Mariupol was shot in the early stages of Russia's invasion of the Ukrainian city, where AP reporter Chernov and his colleagues were stranded and had to fight to survive while trying to cover the war.
The film¡¯s synopsis reads, ¡°As the Russian invasion begins, a team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggles to continue their work documenting the war's atrocities.¡±
Mstyslav Chernov went on to say while accepting the award, ¡°This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history. And I¡¯m honored. But probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say I wish I had never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities. Russians are killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all the civilians who are now in their jails. But I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past.¡±
