While Heath Ledger¡¯s performance being iconic till date, Joaquin Phoenix said, he didn¡¯t feel compelled to imitate his performance.
¡°The attraction to make this film and this character was that we were going to approach it in our own way, so, for me, I didn¡¯t refer to any past iterations of the character. It just felt like something that was our creation in some ways¡± ¨C he was quoted as saying by Entertainment Weekly.
And it seems, that it all worked in his favour, Joaquin Phoenix¡¯s performance has been especially praised for a unique take on the character.
But did Joaquin Phoenix ace Joker¡¯s iconic villainous laugh? He apparently went to new depths in order to do so. He said that it was almost painful to hit the right note.
He said it needed to be ¡°something that's almost painful. I think for Joker it's a part of him that wants to emerge. I think we all kind of assume what a Joker laugh is and it felt like a new, fresh way of looking at it.¡±
Critics hail it¡¯s one of the best films of 2019.
Crowd at #Venezia76 went absolutely ballistic for #JOKER. Film is dark, sick, twisted. I¡¯m with a crowd of fellow critics right now, running through the streets of Venice just screaming. Hollering. My legs are tired. We¡¯ve been doing this for hours. Joaquin is an Oscar contender

#JOKER will change superhero cinema forever. Sure to be controversial. The film is a literal riot. I just flipped a car with two of the guys from IndieWire. A Guardian reviewer fell down and we all kept running. I stepped on his hand. REALLY impressed with Todd Phillips

#Joker is a masterpiece. It's FUCKED UP. This film is sinister and uncomfortable in the best way; I'm actually just shocked it exists... This is a DC film. And it is DARK AND DISTURBING. I am in pure awe and I'm actually delirious. I was not at all expecting that... #Venezia76 pic.twitter.com/tFFVGR2Alh

The movie absolutely transcends being a comic book film and acts as a character study which, at times, will make audiences uncomfortable in wild ways. 10/10 pic.twitter.com/2B2mCkzbZy

Joker feels like if Scorsese made Taxi Driver as a comic book film. Amazing performance, great score, but I¡¯m not sure it knows what it¡¯s trying to say. Could potentially be dangerous for the wrong person to watch. Some fun twists that make me want to see it again and discuss.

I¡¯ve seen #Joker and I fully endorse @JimVejvoda¡¯s decision to give it our first film review 10/10 of the year. I haven¡¯t stopped thinking about it. https://t.co/DjD1hi8LFm

Joaquin Phoenix's performance in #JokerMovie is nothing short of Oscar-worthy. He fully commits to the role mentally and physically. Todd Phillips delivered a game-changing comic book film, and I cannot wait to see it again. #Joker pic.twitter.com/cnrL9bsdR2

Shot by shot #Joker will be remembered for a long time. From Joaquin Phoenix¡¯s pure physical skill to rich storytelling that reminds us how monsters are made when humanity fails. Give that man an Oscar ?.

Phoenix evokes a sense of tragic, melancholic beauty in his transformation as the #Joker, going beyond impersonation & disturbingly explodes on screen in an act so flawless in timing & character perception, it's quite frankly one of the most impressive method acting feats.

Did you know Todd Phillips had to convince Joaquin Phoenix to play this iconic role of Joker for four months and that he lost 23 kgs to nail that role to perfection?
Joker will also be screened at Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival before opening in US theatres on 4 October.
