'Inception' & 'Oppenheimer' Director Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Doesn't Use A Smartphone
Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan talks about why he doesn't use a smartphone. He also shares why he didn't use CGI shots for the Cillian Murphy starrer movie.
Known for his complex plots that are usually interpretations of the sci-fi genre and require multiple watches to fully comprehend the story, Christopher Nolan has given the world of cinema some iconic films like Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Tenet and Dunkirk among others.
As he is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie Oppenheimer, do you know he doesn't like using a smartphone? Here's why!
Why Christopher Nolan Doesn't Use A Smartphone?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said that his kids think he is a Luddite, a person who is opposed to using new technology.
He, however, doesn't use a smartphone for a different reason.
"My personal choice is about how involved I get. It¡¯s about the level of distraction. If I¡¯m generating my material and writing my own scripts, being on a smartphone all day wouldn¡¯t be very useful for me", he said.
He thinks smartphone distracts him easily.
In 2020, he told People Magazine, "I'm easily distractible so I don't really want to have access to the internet every time when I'm bored. I do a lot of my best thinking in those kind of in-between moments that people now fill with online activity, so it benefits me."
Directed and written by Nolan, Oppenheimer is based on the creation of the first atomic bomb and is inspired by the biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The film stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Rami Malek among others.
Do you know Nolan hasn't used CGI shots for the film?
"CG inherently is quite comfortable to look at. It's safe, anodyne. And what I said to [visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson] on Oppenheimer is, 'This can't be safe. It can't be comfortable to look at it. It has to have bite. It's got to be beautiful and threatening in equal measure," he told THR.
So did he detonate an actual atomic bomb on the set?
"It's flattering that people would think I would be capable of something as extreme as that on the one hand, but it's also a little bit scary," he said.
Oppenheimer is set to be released on July 21.
