Jheel Mehta opens up about traumatic scene in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: 'Child marriage ho raha hai isme'
Jheel Mehta, known for playing Sonu Bhide in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, opened up about a troubling experience related to a child marriage episode that left her questioning her involvement with the show.
Jheel Mehta, best known for playing Sonu Bhide in the popular sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, recently revealed a deeply personal and troubling experience from her time on the show in an honest conversation with Siddhesh Lokare on his podcast.
One particular episode, Jheel said, had a profound effect on her.
She shared that the wedding episode involving Tapu left her feeling shaken, as it depicted child marriage, which made her question her decision to be part of the show.
"Wo jo Tapu ki shaadi ka episode tha wo mere liye kaafi traumatising tha. Main soch rahi thi main ye serial kyu kar rahi hu. Child marriage ho raha hai isme," she said. (The episode with Tapu's wedding was quite traumatising for me. I was wondering why I was doing this show. There's a child marriage happening in it.)
"I don't know what all things I cooked in my head. And then when I saw the episode I realised it was a dream. I was questioning my life choices," she admitted. "It was very weird, funny, and crazy in my head."
Jheel's role as Sonu Bhide was later taken over by Nidhi Bhanushali, who portrayed the character from 2012 to 2019.
Following her, Palak Sindhwani continued the role from 2019 to 2024.
Over the years, several other actors, including Disha Vakani, Bhavya Gandhi, Gurucharan Singh, Shailesh Lodha, Neha Mehta, Raj Anadkat, Jennifer Mistry, and Kush Shah, have also exited the long-running show, which has been on air since July 2008.
One of the latest departures from the show was Palak Sindhwani, who cited "inhuman treatment" by the makers.
According to a statement from her team, the production house ignored her health concerns and instead insisted she work with passion, even forcing her to perform scenes despite her condition.
On September 14, 2024, Palak suffered a panic attack on set and informed the production team, but they failed to respond to her deteriorating health.
