Dominic and The Ladies Purse earns just Rs 11.75 crore in India, trade analyst says ¡®Mammootty needs to rethink his release strategy¡¯

Mammootty¡¯s Dominic and The Ladies Purse, which hit the screens on January 23, opened to a good response at the Indian box office despite receiving mixed reviews. It, however, failed to keep the momentum going. The flick has now ended its run and the verdict is out. Dominic and The Ladies Purse is a comedy thriller, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon in his Mollywood debut.

Dominic and The Ladies Purse, starring Mammootty, has ended its run at the Indian box office on a disappointing note. According to Manobala Vijayabalan, a trade analyst, the film grossed Rs 11.75 crore in India.

¡°The film grossed ?11.75 cr in India. Overall the film is a profitable venture when compared to its ultra-low budget,¡± he told Indiatimes.

The film, shot on a budget of Rs 10 crore, was billed as a game-changer for Mammootty as it marked his first collaboration with Gautham Vasudev Menon. The filmmaker is known for directing popular movies such as Ye Maaya Chesave, Kaakha Kaakha, and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. Despite the hype, it received mixed reviews with critics lauding the performances but complaining about the screenplay. This went against the film. It eventually failed to beat Kaathal, which grossed Rs 12 crore in 2023 despite its sensitive theme.

¡°The movie received a mixed response from the audience, hence couldn't manage to fetch big numbers,¡¯ added Manobala.

Interestingly, the Covid pandemic in 2020 established OTT as a viable alternative to theatres. Several filmmakers opted to release their films directly on streaming platforms. Mammootty benefitted from this trend when Puzhu, a realistic drama about a complex relationship and his maiden direct-to-OTT release, received critical acclaim. Meanwhile, he delivered theatrical blockbusters with Turbo (2024) and Bheeshma Parvam (2022) These were essentially action dramas with mass elements. Sadly, Dominic and The Ladies Purse did not fall into this category.This played a role in its failure to deliver at the box office.

This was Mammootty's first release of the year. Bazooka, his second film of the year, was expected to hit the screens on February 14 but got postponed.
