Ashwatthama is considered alive according to Hindu mythology due to the curse Lord Krishna placed on him. While there is no empirical evidence to prove this from historical or scientific point of view, several people have claimed to have seen him in real life. Humans in Kali Yuga who have claimed to see Ashwatthama
1. Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan
As mentioned in Prithviraj Raso, in 1192 after fighting the battle with Mohammad Gauri, Prithviraj Chauhan went to the jungle where he met an old man who had a big horrible scar on his head. Being a physician himself, he tried to cure his wound. However, despite different types of treatments, it remained as it is. That is when it struck Prithviraj Chauhan if he was Ashwatthama. When he confronted the man, he agreed and left right away. This story is mentioned in Prithviraj Raso, a book which was written in the 12th century.
2. A doctor from Madhya Pradesh
Some years ago, a doctor hailing from Madhya Pradesh revealed that a patient with an unusual wound on his forehead came to him to get treated. The doctor said that it seemed like "his brains were pulled out from the front of his head" The doctors tried all kinds of medicines and even tried to stitch the wound up, but nothing worked. He then asked the patient jokingly if he was Ashwatthama. To his surprise, the patient vanished from his cabin. Nobody saw him walking out. The incident still haunts the doctor.
3. Indian Air Force's fighter pilot
A fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force had claimed to see Ashwatthama in the foothills of the Himalayas. According to him, the cursed warrior lived among the Himalayan tribes and even offered his prayers at the temple of Lord Shiva every day.
4. Railway Employee
More than a decade ago, a newspaper reported about a railway employee who took leave and went into the jungles of Navsari, Gujarat. During that time, he met a very tall man, approximately 12 feet tall, who had a wound on his head. He said that he spoke to him and he told him that Bhima was even more taller and stronger than himself.

Ashwatthama is a significant character in the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. The son of Guru Dronacharya was known for his loyalty to the Kauravas. It is believed that the immense prowess of a warrior Ashwatthama was Shivansh or a part of Lord Shiva.

The Curse of Lord Krishna
After the end of the Kurukshetra war, to avenge the defeat of his father and Kauravas, Ashwatthama killed the five sons of the Pandavas while they were sleeping. He thought they were Pandavas themselves. He later unleashed the Brahmastra weapon without proper consideration as well. This angered Lord Krishna who removed the powerful gem on his forehead stripping him of his power and protection and cursed Ashwatthama to bear the consequences of his actions:
- Suffer from skin-related incurable problems
- To roam on Earth alone, without any human companionship, for 3,000 years.
- To live in guilt and remorse

Since then, Ashwatthama has been waiting for Kalki, the prophesied tenth and final avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, who will eradicate evil and restore dharma and thus liberate him.
