Vidaamuyarchi: Analyst feels Ajith Kumar¡¯s action thriller will not get a sequel as ¡®it has underperformed¡¯ at the the box office
Vidaamuyarchi, which hit the screens on February 6, has become the talk of the town as it marks Ajith Kumar¡¯s first collaboration with Magizh Thirumeni. Fans are eager to know if it will get a sequel. However, analysts feel Vidaamuyarchi 2 is unlikely to materialise..

Ajith Kumar¡¯s Vidaamuyarchi, which hit the screens on February 6, has made a decent impact at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. The film¡¯s total collection in India stands at nearly Rs 77 crore (nett). Given the fact that sequels are quite common in Tamil cinema, fans are eager to know if the makers are planning a second installment of the action thriller. While nothing is set in stone, trade analysts feel that Vidaamuyarchi is unlikely to get a sequel.
Will Ajith Kumar¡¯s Vidaamuyarchi get a sequel? Analysts weigh in
Vidaamuyarchi, one of the biggest releases of the year, has made a fair impact at the box office. This has left fans eager to know if a sequel is in the works. However, according to analyst and critic Prashanth Rangaswamy, it is unlikely to happen as the film¡¯s performance is not up to the standards set by Ajith¡¯s previous films.
¡°They will not be doing it. The box office response is not up to the mark. It will do about Rs 150 crore worldwide, which is nothing for Ajith Sir¡¯s movies. It has underperformed,¡± he told India
Vidaamuyarchi has grossed nearly Rs 126 crore worldwide so far and emerged as Ajith¡¯s fourth-highest grosser. While this is a respectable figure, it pales in comparison to the collections of Viswasam and Thunivu, which were Pongal releases. Siva¡¯s action drama earned Rs 205 crore in its full run despite clashing with Petta. Similarly, the H Vinoth-directed film earned Rs 200 crore in its lifetime despite facing competition from Varisu. Ideally, being a solo release, Vidaamuyarchi should have outperformed these movies. However, going by Prashanth¡¯s estimates, that is unlikely to happen.
In fact, it may not even be able to top Valimai, which hit the screens in February 2022 and made Rs 166 crore in its full run. The relatively dull response to Vidaamuyarchi indicates that a potential sequel may not be too commercially viable.
¡°They can easily flesh out part 2 but the financial side has to be taken into consideration. Vidaamuyarchi is not a profitable venture,¡± Prashanth added
Vidaamuyarchi is a remake of the Hollywood film Breakdown. The Kurt Russel-led thriller did not get a sequel despite being a success. According to Ramesh Bala, a trade analyst and tracker, this too indicates that Vidaamuyarchi is unlikely to get a sequel.
¡°I doubt it. The original Hollywood movie has no sequel. So, this too has little chance of getting one. There is potential (based on the content) but I doubt they are actively pursuing it¡± he told Indiatimes.
Ajith¡¯s current commitments suggest Vidaamuyarchi 2 is not going to happen immediately. He is currently awaiting the release of Good Bad Ugly, slated to arrive in theatres this April. The Ji star is also said to be in talks with several filmmakers for his next outing after GBU but Magizh Thirumeni isn¡¯t one of them Moreover, Ajith¡¯s racing commitments too might act as a hindrance for Vidaamuyarchi 2.
