Romantic drama Purple Hearts is trending #1 on Netflix despite being a film that takes paths of convenience rather than forming a drama with certain core values and layers.
In a way, Purple Hearts is like the rom-com version of 365 days because it fits the algorithm and viewing habits of a major set of audiences that are inclined toward watching light-hearted movies on OTT platforms.
Many have realized that the film is just a rom-com that is deficient in layers and proper characterization but many people just don¡¯t care about this factor.
Purple Hearts is a hollow romantic drama but it also has very special, cheesy, relatable and adorable moments that make you adore the film¡¯s surface features and ignore the not so plausible grass-root features of the film.
While talking about this film, I may repeat synonyms of the word ¡®convenience¡¯ a lot of times because this film is kinda based on this word, it shows a plot that finds a convenient audience that relates to it on certain levels, appreciate it and just keep pushing the film up in the algorithm of the OTT platform.
The film stars Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine in pivotal roles, and the story is all about how two people conspire and scam the government to earn extra money and benefits.
Both Cassie and Luke have different purposes, which they are willing to pursue from the extra money. Even after all this, they fall in love with each other in the oddest situation ever, and eventually, a love story that doesn¡¯t make sense at the core starts taking place.
The film would have worked for me if it didn¡¯t try to indulge in characterization at all. The film tries to make a background story of the lead characters, but some pretty useless details are inserted, which extends the runtime of the film.
Eventually, you end up expecting a more refined love story, but the director stops focusing on creating a deep meaning in the narrative. Instead, he chooses to play with emotions and moments that are relatable and engaging to watch but have no important substance whatsoever. As for audiences who are in for just watching a romantic drama with lovely moments, this seems like a perfect match because, conveniently, the film chooses this path and thrives on it.
Another aspect which we should look at is the chemistry of the frontrunners. The chemistry between the actors is one of the most essential components of romantic dramas, it needs to be inherent, and it can¡¯t be imitated or produced on spot. This essential component is missing from the screenplay, yet it still finds some space in the heart of many viewers. This shows how the power of ¡®relatable or pleasing to watch moments¡¯ overpowers all the nitty-gritties of the screenplay.
In a way, this is Sofia Carson¡¯s A Star Is Born with different dynamics. Sofia¡¯s character wants to become a singer/songwriter, and eventually, Luke does help her by supporting her. So, it¡¯s safe to say that it may be inspired by an original novel of the same name, but it does have some minor snippets of theme that are significantly similar to A Star Is Born.
This factor, too, helps to rekindle the fire of romantic drama among the viewers specially the newer generations because they are desperate to see light yet emotional content free of complications and strands that make a film unique.
To tell it more preciously, some movies are just tempted to make excuses or dive into deep layers because they know the essence will eventually hold the film together in the eyes of the viewers.
Purple Hearts has managed to place in the center of this factor in an impressive manner and turned itself into a movie that¡¯s going to break viewing records just because it is eye-pleasing, not because it is unique or has an aspect that needs to be watched and praised.
Overall, Purple Hearts might be filled with numerous flaws and may not be a powerful example of a new-age romantic drama that stands out, but it has themes and moments that would easily catch the attention of the audience and eventually reignite the love for romantic movies. It¡¯s great to see a film work like a charm on the OTT platform just because of relatable and sweet moments, but this fact is hard to admire as, eventually, this movie will promote the streaming giant to think in this direction and produce similar content which will eventually hamper the evolution of romantic dramas more in the future.
