Recalling His Horrific Jail Experience, Karan Oberoi Says It Breaks Human Beings Down Into Pieces
Indiatimes had a chat with Karan Oberoi to know his mindset and next step after getting bail
Karan Oberoi was charged against a rape case in the month of May. After a month now, he is out on bail as its proven that the victim had put false allegations against him. The actor from the beginning has been strong calling the case baseless. Finally, justice happened and he now wants the truth to prevail.
Indiatimes had a chat with Karan to know his state of mind and what will be his next step. Firstly he shared the experience of being charged in a false rape case, ¡°It was shattering and a horrible experience. I was terrified, I was in a complete state of shock, I went into complete numbness. I am a person who has never ever even broken a traffic rule or spoken badly to anyone, I am that kind of person and for me to go through like this is terrifying and even that is an understatement.¡±
However he was relieved that his family and friends believed him and stood by him, ¡°I was overwhelmed and how. I don¡¯t know one single person who even believed in one percent of the allegation on me. I had full support from everyone. I felt very blessed and that helped me to survive in this slammer. My best friend, Pooja Bedi, my family, the entire Oberoi Clan, they stood strong for me. Apart from my family, there were thousands of people who believed in me and that kept me alive."
He further added, ¡°I¡¯m a very spiritual man, a strong believer in karma, one thing I was very certain that truth will always prevail. I might have to go through fire but I wasn¡¯t worried about it because when you have not done anything, why will you fear. Someone told me to cover my face while I was going to jail, I was like why should I, I am not guilty of anything, why would I shy away from showing my face. I stand for truth, I stand for justice.¡±
Talking about being charged in the heat of MeToo Movement, Karan said, ¡°I was the biggest supporter of #MeToo. if you Google, I have written a very stringent blog on it. I remember when Nirbhaya happened, I didn¡¯t eat for 2 days, I was broken and then to be used the same term for something like this, I was fallen. I was like how low can we get, what kind of mindset is that? You are alright to destroy a man¡¯s life? Who would suffer, my mother, my sister, all the women in the family would have suffered as much¡±.
He added, ¡°I have also tweeted about MeToo about me. I don¡¯t know from where this conception came that men are supposed to be hard and emotionless. Men are also abused and I wrote about that. I was very happy that MeToo came, I advocate that, but now it¡¯s time we understand that how this is becoming a social racket, it¡¯s been misused.¡±
When asked what his next step is in this case, Karan clearly said, ¡°Legally I wouldn¡¯t really know, my lawyers are representing me, but whatever is written in the bail order is very apt and correct and I am quite happy with that because it puts everything in the correct perspective and it also talks about the fake attack that the concerned person spoke about, it¡¯s very glaring. I don¡¯t know what the legal steps are, but right now I will be a part of submission whenever needed¡±.
When quizzed what he wants from this case for him, he said, ¡°I want one thing and that is, I want to be the last person in the country to suffer something like this and I am not saying this as a spiritual person, I am saying this as a human being. If I can go through this, there are 600 stories like this in Taloja itself and there are thousands of stories where people are on verse of denial. I had lot of people who stood by me, fought for me but there are a huge number of men who are languishing in jail for years because they don¡¯t have the money or the media support. They have nothing, so my next step is very clearly defined. I will be very strong support of such men, to get the amended and not let the innocent suffer.¡±
We asked how broken was he especially because the rape case was filed by the friend and he said, ¡°It was beyond my imagination, I don¡¯t understand how can one think to destroy someone else¡¯s life like this/ I don¡¯t know what kind of mechanism is there. Also, whatever I have gone through irrespective whoever that person is and what she has done to me, I would never want anyone to suffer like this ever, including the person. I am not that kind of person, legally what can be done should be done and the truth should prevail, but from the human perspective, I can never wish bad for anyone. It¡¯s not my grain, I always say spirituality teaches you one thing that you forgive people and you say may the violence that you are suffering from inside for which you want the whole world to suffer may find peace outside.¡±
When asked about his experience in jail and he calls it worse than horrible, ¡°Especially our Maharashtra jail is like prison of war camps, they are worse, imagine the worst place in planet which is inhuman that¡¯s what our jail represents. There is nothing human about being in jail, the condition is appalling, food is appalling, it¡¯s enough to break human being down into pieces. There is open gutter, you have to be outside for 4 hours for the sun, have you seen chicken being taken in the poultry farms, conditions are very similar to that. Today I can even talk about it, two days ago, I was howling recalling it. Unless you have been there, you don¡¯t know what it is.¡±
Concluding the interview, Karan said his agenda is to fight for others who are suffering in such false cases.
