Why Kangana Ranaut's remarks on the Atul Subhash suicide case have led to outrage¡ªbut may have been taken out of context

On Wednesday, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut shared her thoughts on the tragic Atul Subhash suicide case, stating, "Ek bohot ki naujawan aur unka jo video hai woh dil dehla dene wala ha." (It's about a very young person, and the video is truly heart-wrenching.) However, she didn't stop at that, and known for being at the centre of controversies, Kangana once again sparked headlines for all the wrong reasons¡ªalthough this time, her remarks were not entirely without merit.

What Kangana Ranaut said on the Atul Subhash suicide case

Talking about marriages in general, Kangana Ranaut emphasised that as long as marriages adhere to Indian traditions, they are acceptable.

She then echoed Atul Subhash's sentiments, saying, "Jo communism ka keeda, socialism ka keedsa,nindaniye feminism ka keeda isme..aur ek dhanda log bana lenge usko¡­" (Communism, socialism, and condemnable feminism have crept into this institution... and some people have turned it into a business.)

In support of Subhash, she added, "He was being extorted for crores of rupees¡ªfar beyond his capacity. These practices are deplorable. Such burdens shouldn't fall on young people."

She also called for the establishment of a dedicated body to help victims in such situations.

However, it was her next statement that stirred controversy.

Kangana remarked, 'Having said that, ek galat mahila k audharan lekar, jitne mahilao ko har din partarit kiya jaa raha hai, hum usse nahi jhuthla sakte." (We cannot deny the countless women who are harassed daily because of one bad woman's example), adding, "Humesha, 99% jo hai, marriages mein, purusho ka hi dosh hota hai." (In 99% of marriages, it is the man who is at fault.)

This comment drew heavy criticism, with one social media user commenting, "Its high time men actually GTFO and vote during elections. Morons with these kind of views will get elected because of our inaction."

Another noted, "This is called victim blaming and whataboutry. Male crimes against women and women crimes against male are separate matter. Both crimes doesn't justify crimes against each other. But we have so incompetent people as lawmakers that they can't see the difference and hence our laws are far too messed up compared to developed countries."

What is the Atul Subhash suicide case?

Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old man, was found dead in his Bengaluru home on Monday morning.

Beside his body was a placard that read "justice is due" and a 24-page suicide note.

In the note, Subhash accused his wife of harassment and extortion, claiming she demanded an additional Rs 2-4 lakh from him despite already receiving Rs 40,000 as monthly maintenance.

Speaking about the situation, Subhash's father said, "She (Subhash's wife) used to frame one charge after another. He must have been frustrated but never let us feel that."
