Take a look around and you'll notice how everyone has suddenly started baking and cooking. Or Instagram feeds are filled with chocolate chip cookies, dalgona coffee, one-minute micro-wave gooey chocolate cakes and a string of pasta dishes.
And it's not just limited to cooking. Friends and families are forming bonds and connections while sharing recipes and cooking details. But as we cook some of the finest foods in solitude, our own people, our migrants are dying of hunger.
Due to the 21-day lockdown put in place by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as it's the only viable measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus, our migrants and the poor had to bear the brutality of it.
These migrants who run our cities and take up odd jobs that make our lives easier such as domestic staff, construction workers, delivery executives, grocery workers, security guards etc were all rendered jobless, homeless and without any money as we self-isolate in our homes.
Once out of money, our migrants had no option but head back to the comfort of their own home and village. But how? Air, road and rail transport had also been dismissed as per rules of the lock-down. The helpless and neglected poor started walking thousands of kilometers to reach their village. Those pictures you would have seen were not only heartbreaking but go onto reflect how our system treats people who might not be as financially strong as us.
While we certainly can't do a lot, we are appealing to the human in you to make a difference starting in your own kitchen.
As you go about your day cooking two or three meals a day, we would request you to please cook a little extra- enough to feed three or four people. Leave that food outside your homes or society gates. It can be eaten by the homeless, the needy or just anybody. You would be saving a soul from starvation.
If that can't be done, hunt down community fridges in your area and stock it up so those in need can get access to some food. And if nothing else works out, donate to those charities and organizations that are actually feeding the poor in this crisis right now.
We need to come together, unite in order to ensure not a single Indian sleeps on an empty stomach especially now. These migrants and daily wage workers have lost their entire livelihood for no fault of theirs and it's time we stand up for them and you do too.
