PM Modi Reviews Metro Projects for Six Major Cities
On January 22, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a detailed review of metro projects across six major cities in India, emphasising the importance of teamwork and collaboration among cities. The projects under review included the Delhi Metro (Phase IV), Patna Metro (Phase I), Bhopal Metro, Indore Metro, Agra Metro, and Kanpur Metro.
Focus on Collaboration and Learning
During the meeting, PM Modi highlighted the need for cities to learn from each other's experiences in implementing metro systems. He suggested that workshops be organised to share best practices and address challenges faced during project execution. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of future metro projects across the country.
Agra Metro
The Agra Metro project, which is part of this review, has recently made headlines for its rapid progress. PM Modi virtually inaugurated the priority corridor of the Agra Metro, which spans 6 km and features three elevated and three underground stations. This section was completed nine months ahead of schedule, showcasing the dedication of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in delivering quality infrastructure.
Agra's metro system is designed to cater not only to its 26 lakh residents but also to the over 60 lakh tourists who visit the city annually. The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and pollution while providing a modern public transport option.
Note: It is highly expected that the Agra metro phase 1 metro project is most likely to be operational from next year (as per News18).
Metro Project: Other Cities Under Review
In addition to Agra, PM Modi reviewed metro developments in other cities:
- Delhi Metro (Phase IV): Currently under implementation with six new corridors totalling nearly 107 km.
- Patna Metro (Phase I): Set to be inaugurated later this year with a 6.4 km elevated track.
