Indian National Flag
The Indian National Flag, affectionately known as the Tiranga, is a powerful emblem of our country. The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in vibrant colours: saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. In the centre of the white stripe sits the Ashoka Chakra, a navy blue wheel with 24 spokes. This chakra stands for justice and progress. The saffron colour symbolises courage and sacrifice, white represents peace and truth, and green denotes faith and bravery.
Designed by Pingali Venkayya and officially adopted on August 15, 1947, the flag embodies India's diverse heritage and commitment to unity and justice. It serves as a daily reminder of our country's values and aspirations.
The Significance of Tiranga Colors
Each colour in the Tiranga has a deep meaning:
- Saffron: Represents strength and courage.
- White: Symbolises peace and truth.
- Green: Reflects the land¡¯s fertility and growth.
The Ashoka Chakra in the centre of the white stripe is a key feature of the flag. With its 24 spokes, it symbolises progress and the importance of continuous movement and change.
A Brief History of the Indian Flag
- 1906: The first Indian national flag was raised in Calcutta's Parsee Bagan Square, symbolizing the Swadeshi movement against British rule. This early flag featured green, yellow, and red stripes with various symbols.
- 1907: Madam Bikaji Cama presented a new version at the International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart. Known as the Berlin Committee flag, it had an orange top stripe and stars instead of lotuses.
- 1917: During the Home Rule Movement, Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak unveiled a flag with nine stripes and a British Union Jack in the corner, reflecting the demand for greater autonomy.
- 1921: Pingali Venkayya introduced a flag design with white, green, and red stripes and a Charkha (spinning wheel) in the centre. Though not adopted immediately, it represented India's diverse communities.
- 1931: The flag design was modified to closely resemble the current national flag, with the Dharma Chakra replacing the Charkha.
- 1947: Post-independence, a committee led by Rajendra Prasad finalized the flag design, adopting Venkayya's design but replacing the Charkha with the Dharma Chakra.
Pingali Venkayya: The Designer of the Tiranga
Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, played a pivotal role in designing the Indian flag. Educated at the University of Cambridge and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi¡¯s principles, Venkayya¡¯s dedication to India's independence led him to design a flag representing the nation¡¯s unity. In 1916, he published a booklet featuring twenty-four different flag designs, showcasing his commitment to a symbol that would unite the country.
