Who Makes Women's Day 2024 Google Doodle
IWD 2024 Doodle was illustrated by Doodle artist, Sophie Diao. Here, she shares her thoughts on the making of this Doodle:
Did any of your personal life experiences inform the art direction for this Doodle? If so, how?
My mom's side of the family is mostly women, so whenever we'd go back to visit family in China, we would
spend the entire summer together as a big multi- generational group: my grandma, my four aunts, my four girl cousins, and the numerous old ladies in the village who spent all day cooking food and playing cards. I wanted to capture that cozy, comforting feeling of older generations sharing wisdom and precious quality time with younger folks.
What do you hope people around the world will think and feel when they see this Doodle?
I hope people will inspire people to spend more time with people from different generations. There's so much to learn from the experiences of those who came before us, as well as the wonder of those who are experiencing life for the first time.
About the International Women's Day 2024 Doodle
This Google Doodle commemorates International Women¡¯s Day and acknowledges the strides made in the journey towards gender equality. On this date in 1975, the United Nations officially recognized and celebrated International Women¡¯s Day (IWD) for the first time.
March 8th pays tribute to two early Women¡¯s Day demonstrations¡ªone in Saint Petersburg and the other in New York City. Despite occurring in different years and locations, these rallies shared common objectives of promoting gender equality, encompassing fair and secure employment, the right to vote, and the right to hold public office.
Contemporary IWD marches focus on pressing issues such as gender and racial wage gaps, reproductive rights, and the prevention of violence against women. Today, individuals honor women who have reshaped society, championed equality, and served as positive role models for people worldwide.
The progress achieved by women through the years owes much to the courageous actions of those who preceded them. Cheers to those who paved the way and to those who continue to carry the torch forward¡ªhappy International Women¡¯s Day!
International Women's Day 2024 History
As per UNESCO, the first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York where women protested against harsh working conditions.
According to UNESCO's official website, in 1917, Russian women opted to protest and go on strike with the rallying cry "Bread and Peace" on the final Sunday of February (equivalent to March 8 on the Gregorian calendar). This mobilisation played a pivotal role in securing women's suffrage in Russia.
The 1945 Charter of the United Nations marked the inaugural global accord to explicitly endorse the principle of equality between women and men. However, it wasn't until March 8, during International Women's Year in 1975, that the United Nations officially observed its first International Women's Day.
