Indian Navy Day 2024: Why is it celebrated on December 4 every year?
On 4th December, India celebrates Navy Day to honour the Indian Navy, the maritime arm of the Indian Armed Forces. The President of India serves as the Navy's Commander-in-Chief. This special day highlights the Navy's achievements and commemorates its significant role in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.
This day celebrates the achievements and role of the Indian Navy, and it also marks an important event in history ¡ª the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. On this day in 1971, the Indian Navy destroyed four Pakistani ships, leading to the loss of many Pakistani Navy personnel.
Why is Navy Day celebrated on 4th December?
Navy Day is celebrated to remember Operation Trident, an attack carried out by the Indian Navy on Karachi Harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. This operation was significant as it was the first time an anti-ship missile was used in combat.
The attack took place during the night of 4th-5th December and was a great success. It caused major damage to Pakistani ships and destroyed the fuel storage at Karachi Harbour, without any losses on the Indian side. As part of this mission, the Indian Navy sank four Pakistani ships.
Three Indian warships played a key role in the operation:
- INS Nipat
- INS Nirghat
- INS Veer
The Indian Navy fleet set off from Gujarat¡¯s Okha Port and sailed towards Pakistani waters. By nightfall, they had reached 70 miles south of Karachi. Missiles were launched, sinking the Pakistani ship PNS Khaibar. The brave Navy personnel who participated in this operation were later honoured with gallantry awards.
Navy Day is not just about remembering this historic event; it is also a time to recognise the Navy¡¯s ongoing efforts to protect India¡¯s maritime borders and build international relations through joint exercises, humanitarian missions, and other activities.
