Summer Vacations 2024 In India: Due to rising temperatures, heatwave alerts have been issued in many states across the country. Several state governments have declared a month-long Summer Holidays for all public and private schools due to Concerns for children's safety. Additionally, in some regions, school schedules have been adjusted starting from April.

Some states declared Early Summer Holiday

In response to scorching heat and heatwaves, schools in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana, and West Bengal have announced a full month of holidays. Traditionally, summer holidays are scheduled for May, but rising temperatures prompt discomfort as early as April. Hence, schools opt for early closures to ensure students' well-being. Let's explore which states are granting a month-long vacation for schools during the summer break.

Here are the details of school summer vacations in different states:

Delhi:

Schools in Delhi began their summer vacation on May 11th and will resume classes on June 30th, 2024.

Uttar Pradesh:

Schools in Uttar Pradesh will have their summer vacations from May 21st to June 30th, 2024.

Rajasthan:

Rajasthan schools will be on summer break from May 17th to June 23rd, 2024.

Maharashtra:

Schools in Maharashtra decided to start their summer vacation early because of the heat, beginning on April 18th, 2024.

Odisha:

Following Maharashtra's lead, Odisha also announced that schools would have their summer vacations starting from April 25th, 2024.

West Bengal:

Schools in West Bengal also joined in, starting their summer breaks from April 22nd, 2024.

Jharkhand

In Jharkhand from April 30th, schools have stopped classes up to 8th grade due to rising temperature. They will only have classes for 9th grade and above from 7 am to 11:30 am to stay away from the hottest hours.

Bihar:

Schools in Bihar are currently having a longer summer break, from April 15th to May 15th, 2024.

Puducherry:

For students in classes 1-9 in Puducherry, their summer break began on April 30th, 2024.

Chhattisgarh:

Schools in Chhattisgarh are having a longer summer vacation period, from April 24th to June 14th, 2024.

Karnataka:

Similar to Bihar, schools in Karnataka also started their summer break early, from April 10th to May 15th, 2024.

Punjab:

Though dates aren't officially confirmed yet, it's expected that summer vacations in Punjab schools will start in mid-May due to the heatwave.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) Alert

On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted above-normal maximum temperatures across most of India in May, with a significant increase in heatwave days expected in the northern plains, central region, and adjacent areas of peninsular India.

IMD data indicates that April's heat waves this year were more severe compared to 2023, which was the warmest year on record. This trend is expected to persist into May, with approximately eight to eleven heat wave days projected for regions including south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat.

Other regions, such as remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some areas of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana, may experience five to seven heat wave days in May.
