Explained: What Is Abel Prize And What Does It Recognise

The Abel Prize is a prestigious international mathematics prize, awarded annually by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The prize is named in honor of Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, who in his short life made pioneering contributions in a multitude of fields and has been awarded since 2003. The prize was established by the Norwegian Parliament in 2002 to mark the 200th death anniversary of Neils Henrik Abel.

Neils Henrik Abel was a Norwegian Mathematician who left an unending mark on the many fields which he put his hands on. His most famous single result is the proof demonstrating the impossibility of solving the general quintic equation in radicals.He was also an innovator in the field of elliptic functions, discoverer of what would later be known as Abelian functions. He made all his discoveries while battling with poverty during his short life. He died at the age of 26 due to Tuberculosis.

The Abel Prize "recognises pioneering scientific achievements in the field of Mathematics.The Abel Prize is considered one of the highest honors in mathematics and is awarded to outstanding mathematicians who have made significant contributions to the field. The prize consists of a cash award of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (approximately 880,000 USD) and is often compared to the Nobel Prize in terms of its prestige.

This year the prize was awarded to Argentinian-American mathematician Luis Caffarelli. He was born and raised in Buenos Aires and completed his PhD from University of Buenos Aires and he is also the first South American to receive the coveted prize. He is married to another Argentinian mathematician Irene Mart¨ªnez Gamba, who also teaches at the University of Texas.

The Abel citation states that 'Caffarelli has made groundbreaking contributions to partial differential equations which has radically changed our understanding of classes of nonlinear partial differential equations with wide applications and uses.
