I Was Expelled From School For Being A ¡®Transman¡¯

Despite receiving legal acceptance in the country, the LGBTQ+ community is still awaiting a place in society. Today, we bring before you the story of one such individual, who was forced to leave his 9th standard incomplete, when his school got to know he was a ¡®transman¡¯. His name is Nehal. In a special conversation with India Times, Nehal narrated his life.

My parents were told I was a lesbian

¡°My name is Nehal. I am 20 years of age and live near Alambagh in Lucknow. I was studying in 9th standard when my parents were summoned to the school and told that their daughter was a lesbian. Whereas, I discovered myself to be a ¡®transman¡¯. The principal reasoned while expelling me that my presence in the school would impact other students. This place is not for her. After numerous insults, I was thrown out. We pleaded with them. We also quoted section 377. Still, the school refused to let me continue even until 10th standard.¡±

¡°My life was somewhat better until 9th standard. I was like any other child. But the moment they faced the truth that I was a ¡®transman¡¯, their perspective changed. My identity is not my fault. Despite this, people still resort to weird gestures on seeing me. They wink at me in a mocking tone as they pass by. All of this really troubled me in the beginning. But now, I am used to it and pay no heed to such responses.¡±

Surgery will make my life easier

¡°I am fortunate that my parents did not leave my side after an initial hesitation. I owe my later education to their support. I continued my studies through a private medium. After cracking the exams of 10th and 12th standards, I am now a graduating student. In addition, I also run an institution named ¡®Unicorn Foundation¡¯ and am active as a teacher. I have prepared myself for the surgery. My dream, for which I struggled for long and bore insults from society, will soon bloom. I hope my life turns easier after that.¡±

¡°I take all necessary steps to spread awareness among people according to my capacity. From spreading messages through creative posters to the pride month parade, I never back away from any opportunity. I appeal to all in my community to never feel inferior to any. Speak openly to your parents about yourself.¡±

Don¡¯t be disheartened. Keep striving and victory is assured.

¡°If your relations are unwilling to understand you, don¡¯t be discouraged. Keep striving. One day, you will definitely succeed. It is my personal experience that once your parents stand by you, society will follow. I believe that a small effort from our side can bring about a big change.¡±
