'The NewJeans parallel': K-pop fans laud Chappell Roan's Grammys speech about minor artists' exploitation by record labels
Chappell Roan's speech has struck a chord with K-pop fans, who are using their collective voice to demand change and accountability from record labels. Many fans are also drawing the NewJeans parallel, referencing the girl group's tussle with their record label HYBE.
Chappell Roan, the new age queer icon, has won the internet with her heartfelt speech at the 2025 Grammys after she accepted her Best New Artist title, beating the likes of Sabrina Carpenter and Charlie XCX. In her hard-hitting speech, the Good Luck, Babe! singer held record labels accountable, asking them to provide better treatment to developing artists. Her speech has resonated with K-pop fans, who have now highlighted the NewJeans parallel.
Chappell Roan makes waves with her Grammys speech
Chappell Roan made a powerful statement at the Grammys after winning the Best New Artist award. In her acceptance speech, she used her platform to hold record labels accountable for their treatment of artists, particularly when it comes to fair compensation and benefits. She emphasized the need for labels to provide a livable wage and healthcare to artists, especially those who are just starting out.
'I got signed as a minor, had a difficult time finding a job'
Roan shared her personal experience of being signed at a young age and then dropped, leaving her with no job experience and struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. She highlighted the difficulties she faced in finding a job and affording insurance.
¡°I got signed so young; I got signed as a minor. When I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt, and like most people, I had ¡ quite a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and [could not] afford insurance.¡±
She expressed the emotional toll of feeling committed to her art, only to be betrayed by the system and dehumanized. ¡°If my label had prioritized it, I could have been provided care for a company I was giving everything to. Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection.¡±
She finished her victory speech by asking, ¡°Labels, we got you, but do you got us?¡±

More about Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan began her music career as a teenager, uploading songs to YouTube under the name Kayleigh Rose, and was eventually signed by Atlantic Records in 2015. However, her time with the major label was cut short when she was dropped in 2020. After the setback, Roan found a new home with Dan Nigro's independent imprint Amusement Records in 2023, and released her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in partnership with Island Records. This new chapter in her career has clearly been a successful one, as evidenced by her recent Grammy win for Best New Artist.
