Fashion designer Masaba Gupta reveals shutting down 5 stores in 2 months during pandemic
Fashion designer Masaba Gupta remembers the tough time at work during covid lockdown. She revealed that she had to close down 5 designer stores in a span of two months. She said she could not even afford a cook for her house who was charging Rs 12,000.
Celebrity fashion designer, actor and mom to be Masaba Gupta spoke about her trying times during pandemic. In an interview to Faye D'souza, Masaba revealed she had to shut down five of her designer stores due to financial struggles during covid. She revealed things were so bad that she could not even hire cook for her house worth Rs 12,000.
Recalling the dark phase, Masaba said, "In 2020, when COVID hit, it was the worst time of my life. I don¡¯t think I had even Rs 12,000 to pay to my cook. It was that bad."
During the lockdown, Masaba was in Goa with her husband Satyadeep Mishra when the tragedy struck. She remembers her business head calling up and saying that there is no money in the company anymore.
¡°I think it was end of March or the beginning of April when my business head said, ¡®There is no money now. It¡¯s done. Nobody is buying anything.¡¯ Fashion was at the bottom of the food chain at that time.¡±
Masaba shares that she suggested we make masks from the designer fabrics to get some money flow.
In the same interview, Masaba said, ¡°I would be on calls, hearing the brand will shutdown on July 10. The dates would keep changing. Sometimes July 15, sometimes August. House of Masaba was wrapping up. We were on calls with malls, every store, landlords, requesting them to reduce the rent. Some people were very kind. We were so bad that we took our security deposits back from some people. We were in the middle of a crazy expansion. I had my investors on call, who said you should think of wrapping up. We don¡¯t think this is going to work and there is going to be a different world post-COVID.¡±
In the midst of this, life surprised Masaba and she was offered a Netflix show Masaba Masaba that helped her take off. The release of the show helped her getting back on track and make money.
Well, this is a very important life lesson from Masaba that if life throws lemon, obstacles, hurdles at you, there will be many other opportunities that will help you grow. Masaba didn't have to shut down her fashion label and she ended up making money at her stores as well after the show went live.
Masaba is expecting her first child with husband Satyadeep Mishra.
