Sometimes what you need is a reality check to jolt you back on track to losing weight. That could be in the form of an incident that shakes you up emotionally or mentally or a physically ailment that is triggered by the onset of obesity. For Divyang Shroff it was his unhealthy state of mind that eventually preempted a complete overhaul in his lifestyle.

The most difficult part was being body shamed, not being able to carry off the clothes I liked, says Divvang Shroff.

¡°I was never really bullied, the only bully was myself, but I did have knee issues that started popping up at a very young age. Every morning I would look at myself in the mirror with disgust and I would tell myself I am fat and unfit,¡± states Shroff.

¡°I would get frustrated and instead of working out, I would choose to turn to pizzas or desserts for comfort. This became a routine for me and I was going nowhere. This made me go crazy and I had to get out of this routine.¡±

For Divyang Shroff his inspiration came on the football pitch

"I got sick and tired of everyone telling me I was getting fatter by the day. To be honest, I knew it was true because I had no motivation. I was out of shape terribly. I would constantly eat fast food and then lay on the couch watching television or reading a book," confessed Shroff.

"On my football training, I started feeling the side effects of my bad choices. I ended up being the slowest player. I was clumsy during my dives and thus, I decided it was time for some real change and that is how my fitness journey began," affirms Shroff.

He changed his diet for good, thereafter.

For breakfast he would stick to milk, green tea and dry fruits

For lunch he would have vegetables, four rotis, daal

For dinner he would vary from his diet from day to day. He would stick to homemade food even it was something fancy.

He didn't even need to completely give up on his vices.

¡°I have a sweet tooth and thus it is difficult to stay away from desserts and pizza is life for me,¡± says Shroff.

His low-calorie recipes included, daal khichidi, soups and salads, paneer.

Shroff truly believes that there are no shortcuts to losing weight

¡°There are NO shortcuts to losing weight. It took discipline, commitment and hours upfront to learn about proper exercise and nutrition. Drinking a lot of water surely helps.,¡± Shroff.

Staying motivated and focused required being inventive requires a gradual change in mindset

He set constant reminders for himself to stay on track. ¡°When I crave for outside food, I pull out some of my old pictures and remember why I never want to get back to this. Invest in planning a beach holiday once a year and the motivation will always be in place,¡± says Shroff.

He changed his lifestyle for good. ¡°Fitness has become a lifestyle for me now. More than losing weight or gaining muscle, I am more focused on maintaining high fitness levels for myself. I have got a mindset on how my workouts make me feel rather than how they make me look,¡± states Shroff.

Some of his serious lifestyle changes were for a short period of time, while others were long-term

His toughest changes came when he tried to cut his vices. ¡°Cutting out pizzas for almost a year was the toughest one, reducing alcohol to maybe once in two months was another,¡± states Divyang.

The closest people to you can make the biggest difference in this situation. ¡°I try to eat dinner by 8 pm and walk as much as I can. My mom is a fitness trainer herself, so she helped me with the changes going smoothly.¡±

Shroff now sets targets to get fitter every year. He sees himself in great shape 10 years down the line by sticking to the lessons he's learnt on the way.
