Hyderabad student dies after attempting to eat three 'poor¨ªs' at once during school lunch; know risk factors of choking

In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old child choked to death due to eating more than three 'pooris' at once, which led to suffocation. According to media reports, the food got stuck in his throat, which resulted in breathlessness and choking.

The tragic incident occurred in a school in Secunderabad on Monday. During lunchtime the incident took place, and seeing the boy gasping for breath, his classmates alerted the teachers, who rushed the child to a local hospital, but it was too late; the child passed away before the doctors could provide him with any medical help.

The father of the deceased in a police complaint stated that the school authorities informed him about his son's condition.

How does choking occur, and is it a serious condition?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, choking occurs when a person can¡¯t breathe because food, a toy, or any other foreign item is blocking their throat or the windpipe.

This can also happen due to fast eating or not chewing the food properly. The condition can turn serious if it is untreated or if intervention is delayed.

Choking can lead to loss of consciousness and even death. In such a situation, there are higher chances of brain damage due to a lack of oxygen passing to the brain cells. It cuts off the oxygen to the brain.

• In such a situation, there is always a panicked look on the face.

• Skin, lips, and nails that change colour may turn blue or grey.

• Cut food into small pieces
• Chew and swallow the food thoroughly.
