All of 27, artist Tejswini Sonawane has seen several hardships in her young life but hasn't let them rob her of her passion ¡ª art.
Her ongoing show, titled Inhabited Beings, is an exhibition of vivid printmaking (graphic). Shuttling between Sholapur and Mumbai, Tejswini runs her own etching press. Finishing her Foundation Course at the Sholapur Drawing College and thereafter a BFA at the Bharatiya Vidyapeeth in Pune, followed by MFA Diploma in Printmaking at the Sir JJ School Art Bombay, the young artist has had her prints published in several popular art journals.
Encouraged by her family, Tejswini pursued printmaking, which quickly became her passion. "Initially, I started morphing self portraits by super-imposing images of animals. Printmaking allowed me to edit and impose through the use of different surfaces and troughs created by deeper etches. While I'm not particularly fond of animals. I use their forms to distort human faces. I believe misogyny expresses and inhabits in our expressions through animal metaphors anyway," she says.
Inhabited Beings by Tejswini Sonawane can be viewed at Jehangir Art Gallery, AC-I, 161-B, M G Road, Kala Ghoda till August 10, 11 am to 7 pm.
