15Things You'll Relate To If You're Away From Home During The Festive Season

The festive season is the time to celebrate with family and friends. It's the time of the year to meet your loved ones, and exchange presents with relatives and family. But sadly, it doesn't work out that way if you're living away from home, in a city hundreds of kilometers away. This is probably what you'll end up doing.

1. You spend weeks thinking about how will you have a ghar wali diwali away from home.

You cannot stop thinking about home. In fact, you wish for a magic break that will allow you to head straight back so that you can spend time with your family.

2. You use scented candles, marigold flowers and tea lights to decorate your apartment, yet you fail to recreate the atmosphere mom creates at home.

The decorations, food, reunions and card parties back home are way better. No matter how hard you try to make yourself feel the same, it just doesn¡¯t happen.

3. Your heart breaks when you realise that all other friends have gone back home. It gets worse when you see them posting pictures with family on social media.

4. You miss your neighborhood and the cracker bursting session with colony friends and cousins. You buy phuljhari, phok bomb and ladis, but bursting crackers alone isn't fun at all.

5. You miss the diwali melas in your city, visiting cousins to give Diwali gifts, card parties with childhood friends and buying new clothes especially for the festival. .

6. You ask yourself, which aarti do we listen during the lakshmi puja? *You try to figure out the rituals, but end up feeling homesick*

You call your mom to ask about the steps for doing a particular puja, and she guides you right through it, as always.

7. You go shopping alone because that¡¯s the only therapy for a lonely soul. But, you know that you won't be a part of the family picture this year.

8. You crave home-cooked food. The ladoos, mithai, chocolates and everything that mom must be cooking right now in the kitchen.

Sweets, ladoos, halwa and all the nice things that are being cooked in the kitchen right now, that will never make it to your tummy.

9. You gorge on the use of technology.

You video call everyone back home. In fact, there are times when you do that thrice a day.

10. You dress up nice and festive to get into the mood. You click a selfie to send it back home.

You light a few diyas and take a few selfies so that you can WhatsApp them to mom and dad.

11. The TV becomes your best friend. And thank channels for customising 'diwali' episodes, although they aren't interesting at all.

Binge watching movies and sitcoms makes you feel a little better.

12. You feel a bit like a loner, and you don't really like it. *I want to go home!!!!*

13. Strange, but you feel nostalgic about the cleaning sessions going on at home. You can recall your mother screaming at the maids, and your father as well because festive cleaning is so important at home.

So you clean your apartment and room, because that¡¯s what mom made you do back home.

14. It's hard to match up to Mom's set beliefs of Diwali, like not closing the windows on Diwali because goddess Lakshmi visits your house,lighting at least one diya with desi ghee in it or spotting an owl because it's considered lucky.

15. After eating kaju katli, getting annoyed at little kids bursting crackers and getting bored with TV, you decide to crash early, in the hope that you¡¯ll be home next year.
