As individuals age or spend extensive periods in front of screens, their vision may inevitably become blurred. The numbers on eye charts may fluctuate, with near vision deteriorating for some and far vision for others. The encouraging news, however, is that this isn't necessarily irreversible damage. There are effective ways to counteract the effects of compromised vision.

Eye exercises for better vision

Here are some eye exercises that are often recommended to promote better vision and reduce eye strain.

Palming

Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Rub your hands together vigorously to generate warmth. Close your eyes gently and cup your warm palms over them without applying pressure. Ensure that no light enters, creating a dark, soothing environment. Take slow, deep breaths, focusing on the warmth and darkness, allowing your eyes to relax. Repeat for 5-10 minutes to experience maximum relaxation.

Eye roll

Sit or stand with a straight posture. Slowly roll your eyes in a circular motion clockwise for about 10-15 seconds. Reverse the direction counterclockwise for another 10-15 seconds. Blink a few times to refresh your eyes. Repeat the process, gradually increasing the duration as your eye muscles become more flexible.

Near and far focus

Choose a nearby object and focus on it for 10-15 seconds. Shift your focus to a distant object for another 10-15 seconds. Alternate between near and far, allowing your eyes to adapt and strengthen their focusing ability. Repeat for several cycles.

Making an infinity sign

Visualize a horizontal figure-eight in front of you. Trace the shape with your eyes slowly and smoothly, following the imaginary lines. Focus on the continuous, flowing movement of the figure-eight, stimulating eye coordination. Repeat for 1-2 minutes.

Blinking

Consciously blink every few seconds, especially during prolonged periods of focused attention, such as when using digital screens. Blinking refreshes the eyes, preventing dryness and reducing eye strain.

Eye massage

Gently massage your eyelids and temples using circular motions with your fingertips. Apply light pressure while moving in a circular pattern. Close your eyes during the massage to enhance the relaxation effect. Repeat for two to three minutes, focusing on areas that feel tense.

Focusing

Hold a small object, like a pen, at arm's length, and focus on it. Slowly bring the object toward your nose while maintaining focus. Move the object away again, keeping it in focus. Repeat this process for 10-15 repetitions, gradually increasing as your eyes strengthen.
