Winter may be the season for cosy nights and steaming mugs, but it also brings dryness that can sneak up on you ¨C both inside and out. Before you find yourself with chapped lips and sluggish energy, take a proactive approach to fighting winter dehydration!
How can you tackle dehydration during winter?
Internal hydration
When it comes to hydration, the first thing one has to do is tackle the same internally. After all, you will glow from the outside when you glow from within, right? Here are some steps to take:
Drink water even if you aren't thirsty
Winter weather can mask thirst cues, so make water your go-to throughout the day, even if you don't feel parched. Aim for 6-8 glasses daily, adjusting based on your activity level and climate.
Go for warm fluids
Ditch the ice water! Opt for herbal teas, warm lemon water, or even broth-based soups to keep your fluids warm and comforting. This will also make you want to drink more fluids while keeping your throat soothing.
Eat food rich in water content
Fruits and vegetables like celery, cucumbers, watermelon, and citrus fruits are naturally water-rich and delicious snack options. You can keep munching on these to stay hydrated in addition to staying healthy.
Minimise having any dehydrating content
Watch out for caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration. Enjoy them in moderation and prioritize water to counter their effects. If it comes to you drinking more of these, keep in mind to drink equal amounts of water.
External hydration
Now that the internal hydration bit is sorted, here is what you can do to keep yourself hydrated externally:
Humidify your home
Dry air leeches moisture from your skin. Invest in a humidifier to add moisture to the air, especially in bedrooms while you sleep. This can also keep you comfortable while you sleep.
Moisturise regularly
Apply a good moisturiser to your face and body after showers or baths, and throughout the day as needed. Look for formulae with hyaluronic acid and ceramides to trap moisture in your skin.
Protect your lips
Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent chapping and sun damage. Reapply frequently, especially before going outside. The skin on the lips is much thinner than the rest of your skin, so it gets dry much more easily. So, keeping lips moisturised is much more of a task.
Take shorter, lukewarm showers
Long, hot showers can strip your skin of natural oils, leaving it dry. Shorten your showers and opt for lukewarm water to maintain skin health. If you take a cold shower, it can be better but again, we do get how that almost becomes impossible in the biting cold.
