It's been 83 years. After all this time, 105-year-old Virginia Hislop has finally earned her Master's degree! The adorable grandma, dressed in her cap and gown, trotted up to the stage and received the loudest cheer from the audience. Her beaming smile and proud moment warmed everyone's hearts, proving that it's never too late to achieve your dreams. But, what took her so long? Let's dive into her adorable story!
Virginia Hislop began studying at Stanford University in 1936. She got her bachelor's degree in 1940 and started her master's in education to teach.
However, she hadn't finished her thesis when the U.S. entered World War II in 1941.
That year, her boyfriend George Hislop, an ROTC student (a program that assists students through college in exchange for military service after graduation), was called to serve.
They got married, and Virginia left campus - but she had not yet submitted her master's thesis.
83 years later, Virginia returned to Stanford and earned her graduate degree.
"Fast-forward 83 years -- we don't have a thesis requirement anymore, so she's actually satisfied the requirements for a Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Education," said Daniel Schwartz, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education, to CBS News.
"So, 83 years later, we're honoring this woman who has done so much."
But what inspired Hislop to return to get her degree? "From time to time, I wished I had finished and gotten my master's," Hislop says. "Part of it was the fact that I've been a college director for many years and didn't have the advanced degree that some of the others did."
Stanford University shared, "When she rose from her seat at the ceremony, donned in cap and gown, to walk across the stage and receive her master¡¯s hood, the applause roared."
Her radiant smile lit up the camera as her grandkids waved and cheered.
"My goodness," she said. "I've waited a long time for this."
Well, moral of the story - it's never too late to get educated!
