Learn More Native Languages & Pass In More Subjects: CBSE Proposes New Plan For Class 10 & 12

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed significant changes to the academic framework for Class 10 and Class 12.

This includes studying three languages (with at least two native Indian languages) in Class 10 and mandatorily passing in 10 subjects, as opposed to five now.

Similarly, class 12 students need to study two languages (with at least one native Indian language) and clear six subjects instead of five to graduate.

These proposals form a part of the CBSE's initiative to implement a national credit framework in school education, as reported by Indian Express.

The plan had been sent to all heads of CBSE-affiliated institutions late last year, and reportedly, CBSE has received favourable responses.

What does the new CBSE plan for Class 10 & 12 indicate?

According to the CBSE plan, there would be 1200 notional learning hours in an academic year, with each subject being allotted a certain number of hours. The hours will include both academic learning and non-academic learning outside school.

Notional learning hours pertain to the amount of time an average student is expected to spend attending classes, preparing for exams, and completing assignments and homework.

The notional learning hours framework is designed to allocate credits, making students/learners eligible for earning 40 credits.

Consequently, every student's report card will display the credits obtained for each subject, and these records will be stored in digital format in the Academic Bank of Credits, accessible through a connected Digilocker account.

The credit will be separate from the marks obtained by the student.

Class 10 students will have to pass in 10 subjects, out of which three are native Indian languages.

The seven main subjects proposed, as reported by Indian Express, are:

• Mathematics and computational thinking
• Social science
• Science
• Art education
• Physical education and well-being
• Vocational education
• Environmental education

Mathematics and computational thinking, Social science, Science and Environmental education will be assessed externally, while the rest would have a mix of internal and external assessment.

In Class 11 and 12, students are required to study six subjects, which include two languages and four subjects, with the option of selecting a fifth subject.

It is mandatory for at least one of the two languages to be a native Indian language.
