Despite Visa Backlogs, Record Indian Students Went To US For Higher Studies In 2022-23: Report

In the academic year 2022每23, the number of Indian students studying in the U.S. saw a significant 35% increase, reaching a record high of 268,923. Additionally, India has surpassed China as the leading host of international graduate students in the U.S., marking the first time since 2009每10.

How many Indian students enrolled in US universities in 2022-203?

The count of Indian graduate students witnessed a remarkable 63% surge, reaching 165,936 students, an addition of nearly 64,000 students from the previous year.

Furthermore, there was a 16% increase in the number of undergraduates.

According to the 2023 Open Doors Report, an annual statistical survey on international students in the US, India remains the top country of origin for students pursuing Optional Practical Training (OPT), with a modest 1% increase.

China and India remain the two leading sources of international students at U.S. colleges and universities.

In the academic year 2022每23, 53% of all international students were from China and India, a percentage similar to the previous year. However, there has been a shift in the market share for each country of origin, with 27% of students from China and 25% from India.

This marks a change from 33% from China and 18% from India in the academic year 2017/18, as indicated by the data.

In the academic year 2022每23, the number of students staying in the U.S. for practical work experience after graduation on OPT increased by 8% to 198,793 students.

This growth, totaling 14,034 students on OPT, can be attributed to the resurgence of graduate students after the pandemic-induced decline in the previous two years.

With the continuous growth of incoming classes, particularly in the graduate student segment, it is expected that the number of OPT students will also see a continued increase.

Most of the leading places of origin witnessed rebounds, with 23 out of the top 25 places experiencing growth and 14 returning to pre-pandemic enrollment levels.

Which other countries reached an all-time high in 2022-2023?

Notably, eight of the top 25 reached all-time highs: Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, India, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, and Spain.

The total number of international students, including enrolled and OPT students, exceeded 1 million, rebounding to nearly pre-pandemic levels at 1,057,188 students in 2022/23.

This 12% growth represents the fastest international student growth rate in over 40 years, specifically a 12% increase since 1978/79.

This year-on-year growth of 108,000 international students studying at U.S. higher education institutions is the largest in Open Doors history.

Open Doors 2023 encompasses international students enrolled at U.S. higher education institutions in the United States and online from abroad, including those on OPT.

Approximately 95% of students were physically in the United States for their studies.

The data revealed that international student representation increased to 6% of the U.S. higher education population.
