1. Chartered Accountancy (C.A)
The most common career option chosen by students from Commerce background is that of Chartered Accountancy (C.A).
Chartered Accountancy is the professional practice of accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial assessment for an individual or an organisation.
A Chartered Accountant in India needs to qualify the examinations conducted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and complete three levels ¨C Common Proficiency Test (CPT), IPCC (Integrated Professional Competency Course), and FC (Final Course).
After Class 12, students can indeed study for CA through Foundation Route which has certain eligibility criteria:
- The candidate must have passed Class 12 and completed four months of study period after CA registration to be able to appear for Foundation examination.
- The candidate needs to register with Board of Studies and complete four months of study period.
2. Company Secretary (CS)
Company Secretary is a professional course by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). A Company Secretary takes care of the efficient administration of a company, which includes ensuring legal and statutory compliance, and governance-related issues.
To become a CS, a candidate has to clear three levels after their 12th exams ¡ª Foundation program, Executive Program, and Professional Program.
For those with an inclination towards theoretical law, a Company Secretary job is apt.
3. Actuary
Actuarial Science is a field dealing with the analysis of risk across various fields, such as insurance, business, finance, and healthcare. Actuarial Science professionals employ mathematical equations, statistics, and financial theories to determine risks that can impact business.
So in this field, professionals are responsible for collecting statistical data, conducting analysis, and designing business strategies.
For an actuary job, students need to complete their Class 12 commerce exams and then complete graduation in Maths, Statistics with Actuarial Science or B.Com. Students also have to appear for the Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET) and pass all the 15 stages.
4. Bank PO
A Bank Probationary Officer (PO) works as a Public Relations Officer, handles customer complaints and addresses various customer related issues. The responsibilities also include managing cash flow, loans, mortgages and finances.
Every year, all government and private banks announce vacancies in the PO job role such as the SBI PO, IBPS PO, and ICICI Bank PO.
After the completion of the probation period of 2 years, the candidate goes on to higher posts.
5. Cost and Management Accounting
Cost and Management Accounting is a lucrative career option for commerce students.
Cost and Management Accountants support companies in making sound financial decisions, managing expenses, and improving operational efficiency by examining the company's financial data, developing budgets and conducting cost analyses.
To become a CMA, the student must enroll with the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) and complete three levels of the CMA course - foundation, intermediate, and final.
